I am new here and also new to Toyota technical issues. My 2003 Matrix XRS A/T, has a very high idle speed (around 2000 rpms) in park/neutral. I have cleaned out the throttle body with no luck. This happened after i picked up my vehicle from having its bumpers painted. The vehicle was at the shop for about 3 weeks. Just for the record, everything was fine before the vehicle took a 3 week vacation from daily use. There are no check engine codes.
I am not very familiar with Toyota, but can anyone that has had the same type of problem, chime in and give me a hand with this.
There is something called an Idle Air Control valve. In the online manual (that is sometimes available in various places) it says "A rotary solenoid type IAC valve controls the fast idle and idle speeds." It controls flow around a bypass of the throttle plate. Its job is to increase the idle speed at various times, such as (I guess) when the engine is cold, the A/C is on, etc. I can't guess whether it is staying open because the ECM told it to open (due to some fault, such as the engine thinking it is cold), or because it is stuck open after the ECM tells it to close.
first of all you dont have the xrs if its automatic. I think you mean the XR. Secondly it will idle at 2 or a lil above whne cold, rpms will come down as car warms up, when its fuly warmed up it will idle under 1. are yoiu sure its not cold when doing this?

Yes, that is true. A friend told me that sometimes the IAC Valve with stick and cause such problems. He recommended that i spray the lower opening inside the throttle body (where the IAC valve is located) and spray throttle body cleaner. I did so, and still no results. To my logic, it seems as if the IAC is stuck and thus registering as if its cold and thus that is why i have such a high idle speed. When normal, i had an idle speed of close to 800 rpm's. Now in gear, idle is around 1100-1200 and in park/neutral between 1600-2000. This is without the A/C on. When the A/C is on, it goes down slightly, but not very much.
Is there any other type of procedure to deal with the IAC and get it working as it should?
Thanks for your reply as well. Any help is well appreciated.

Hi there:
I purchased my Matrix brand new from the dealer in 2003. It is the XRS model. In the online toyota service manual catalog, the XRS (at least for the year 2003, i don't know about subsequent years) was available in manual and automatic. My vehicle has the 180HP Celica engine.
From brand new to just recently, cold idle was around 1000-1200 at most and would decrease until about 800 rpms. The vehicle functioned exactly as indicated up until i left the vehicle for the bumpers to be repainted and i ended up giving the Matrix a short vacation as i was stored for about 2 months without any use whatsoever.

well that is normal. maybe its the cable? dunno what else it could be, as I am still learning about cars. And I didnt know it came with auto in 2003, thats cool! Hope your enjoying the matrix and best of luck
Yeah, there was a limited amount sold as an xrs auto although still not enough power as the manual. I'm not sure why it would be doin' that if they just had to paint the bumper and that's nowhere close to what your problem is.
to be honest with you i think there isnt anything wrong with your car. see sometimes after you take your car in for service you notice the smallest things after you get it back. see you might not have noticed that idle up. but toyota has been known to have a high idle. i drive a 2005 toyota matirx xr auto and my idle is at 1800 rpm. way higher than my chevy cavalier which is at 1400 rpm idle. i think you got used to a high idle and didnt notice it before. but since it has been so long and most people think their car ran the greatest before a wrenchhead gets in it, i would have to say don't worry about it.

Nah, if the idle is above 1000 after being warmed up with the A/C off, something is wrong. My manual 04 XR idles at nearly 2000 on a cold day when I first start it, but after the engine warms up it goes down to about 700. Your automatic should idle at about the same speed.
