storage box below shifter

Well, I'm happy to say I found a used Matrix equipped the way I wanted one in the color I wanted, 2004 Cosmic Blue, 6 speed XR, 37,000 miles. Has anyone else had this problem? The storage box below the shifter won't stay shut. Everytime I hit even a light bump, it opens up. When looking for a Matrix, I noticed a number of them open but thought someone left them open.

Well I've only had my 2006 XRS for about 6 weeks and mine hasn't done that...

This is a common complaint. My 04 XR storage compartment will pop open if I don't shut it carefully -- I sort of jiggle it until the latch seats properly. Others have said they can't get it to stay closed no matter how carefully they shut it.

Under shifter storage box.

I have an 03 and fixed this problem by using tubing around the two hinge pivot points. Heavy eletrical heat shrink tubing should do the trick. Stuart

I've had a great dealer experience. Although the vehicle is slightly our of warranty, my local dealer (Cobb County Toyota in Georgia) repaired the latch free of charge. It no longer falls open when my knee hits the console or under hard acceleration. They've treated me fairly before with my wife's van and continute to do so on this car. It works as it should now!!!!

Never happened to me. And I use that as a trash can, not a storage compartment...

Yeah, this tends to happen on '03 and '04 models only. They redesigined the door for '05. You can purchase all the parts needed to "upgrade" your '03-'04 door to the newer one, but it is rather expensive (you have to buy the whole lower trim piece). Just do what I did - I glued the thing shut.
