i just recently purchased an 05 matrix xrs with 23,000 miles. i love the car the vvtl-i is extremely nice, it actually was the selling point for me, previously i had owned a 2000 civic si. but when i heard it was the gts motor in the xrs i was extremely interesed in the car, the thing is its majorly detuned from 180hp to 164, so i was wondering if ne one knew what toyota did to detune it. is it mostly mechanical, or is it all computer and can i just simply throw a gts ecu at and start pullin like one. if anyone knows please help me!!!
It is NOT detuned. The XRS Matrix/Corollas are rated at 170HP, different computer. In 2006 Toyota is measuring the horsepower on ALL of it's cars (as is Honda, etc) at the wheel now rather than at the crank. Though it may read 164 rest assured you're still getting 170HP at the crank. There is no difference in performance between 05-06 XRS.
It is detuned in comparison with the same motor in the celica GTS.
I think I read somewhere the cams were slightly different to give more mid range torque, but I saw that a looong time ago and I have no way to back it up.

The 04 onwards Matrix XRS and 05-06 Corolla XRS have the newer variant of the the 2ZZ-GE that puts out 170 HP (165 hp in 06 because of the new SAE ratings), but have a much flatter and consistent torque curve below 5000 rpm than the Celica GTS. Furthermore, if you compare dynos of the GTS 2ZZ vs XRS 2ZZ, although dynoing around 5 - 7 whp less than the GTS 2ZZ, the XRS 2ZZ puts out power a lot more consistently across a broader range of rpm.
Surpisingly, throw an cold air intake and a high flow exhaust on both cars and they dyno extremely close. Both cars dyno in the 166 - 170 whp (192 - 195 HP @ crank) range with intake and exhaust. It is because the parts on XRS are more restrictive than that on the Celica GTS for better fuel economy and noise insulation.

i recieved more knowledge than i was asking for, and i thank u all, i know only of the typical honda tuning stuff, so i'm new to toyota's, and for the record a buddy i work with owns an 00 civic Si and we decided to go head to head just for the hell of it, and well the xrs walked all over the si, not to an extreme of like 4 car lengths or ne thing maybe like 1 and a half just in a short run... oh yes another question i was thinking of purchasing the TRD cold air intake, wise investment or better off with aem or injen?
Injen all the way. There is no better CAI for the 2ZZ-GE than the Injen. It is best when it comes to increase in performance or sound. Here are some flyby and cabin videos of my Corolla XRS:
p.s. Maybe because Corolla XRS weighs almost 200 lbs lighter than the Matrix XRS, I have beaten the 00 Si by more than 3-4 car lengths at around 80 mph.

that injen does sound nice, i guess thats what i'll be purchasing...oh yea the corolla xrs is 200lbs lighter than the matrix xrs, well the Si is 400lbs lighter than the matrix haha so i guess that 400lbs didnt make difference for him at all
An intake and exaust make a huge difference on a 2zz car, the stock intake and can are very restrictive.
Definately go Injen for the intake, and any axle back will make a huge difference for the exaust.

Dont waste your time with anything TRD unless you can pick it up used dirt cheap. Most of the parts are products that are manufactured by other companies and rebadged under the TRD name.
And +1 for the Injen. I have it on my Corolla XRS ... it's fantastic.
I agree TRD is useless. There are so many good companies making quality products for the 2ZZ-GE while keeping the cost much much lower that I would not even bother looking at anything TRD. Like, it is dyno proven that Injen gives you easily atleast 11 - 12 whp more. Plus, the sound is just unbeatable.
I was looking to put on a high flow exhaust so I checked TRD sport exhaust for Corolla XRS and it was $700 CAD for an axleback. I was like what the hell is TRD thinking???
Anyway, I ordered high flow Greddy SP2 (Evo 2 muffler and tip are too big) that cost only $400 shipped. Greddy is known for awesome sounding exhausts especially for true sports cars like Supra and Skyline etc. It gives around 6 whp more and a bit more torque in lift as well. It is on it's way now.
Watch out for some new pictures and videos once I put my Greddy exhaust on.

No the 00 is not 400 lbs lighter than your Trix. The 00 Si was only 50 lbs lighter than the Corolla XRS (2615 lbs vs 2650 lbs). So it should be a tad over 200 lbs lighter than your Matrix XRS (2820 lbs). The 02 - 05 Si weighed 2780 lbs and the newest Si with the K20Z3 engine is 2900 lbs.

i dunno i thought it was around 2415, but whatever mistakes are maken...mostly on my part haha. but something pissed me off when i was inspecting underneath my vehical at work (saturn of ontario, california) i was curious to y my exhaust was so damn loud, so i put the car in the air and seen the exhaust is stock but then i seen something right where the muffler attatches by the axel a spring was missing and there was clearly alot of exhaust leaking. so investment in a spring is needed...and i'm guessing the owner before me had an aftermarket exhaust on it
