Hey all. I just got my 06' XR last Saturday. Love it so far. However, I wanted to get an in-dash navigation system for the car. I know some of the models come with the nav in it, but my model doesn't. So bascially, how would I go about getting the system in my car, and aprox. how much am I going to be spending?
Hell, if anyone knows a good alternative to the stock one, I'm very open to suggestion. I've looked, but only really come up with the Pioneer which is like $1700.
You don't have to spend ship loads of money to get a really good navigation.
I got a dash-mounted unit for $600 CAD. It is the best European company at the moment called Tom Tom Series 700. Now, it is getting really big in NA. Other choices for me were Garmin, Sony and JVC dash mounted navigations, but Tom tom 700 beats all of them hands down when it comes to most functionality for the money. This navi is not DVD based, but satellite based (so I do not have to buy update DVDs. Simply register free on the company website and download latest updates for maps and functionality) with a full color 3.5 diagonal TFT screen (like a laptop screen), a lady voice guided directions and has a 2.5 GB hard drive that has all North America/Europe and South America pre-loaded on it as well as thousands of points of interest i.e. gas stations, restaurants, supermarkets etc. Having a 6 speed stick that needs to be shifted a lot in traffic, the best feature is the blue tooth where I configured my blue tooth cell phone with the navigation. So, I receive all my calls on the navigation and use the touch screen to dial out. My hands never have to leave the steering or stick while I am talking with someone on the phone.
My suggestion is save a lot of money and don't buy those fancy in-dash DVD based units. They are overpriced and most of them need DVD purchase of updates every few months. The only advantage is bigger 7 inches screen on most of them. So it is up to you if you want to spend another $1000 mainly for a larger screen.

The Tungsten T3 is a discontinued model now. I bought a while back online for about $200CDN and I got the Palm GPS Navigation pkg on eBay for $200CDN. I saved quite a bit.
You can pretty much use the same set up w/ a current Palm handheld as long as it has bluetooth.
Just bought a TomTom 300 for my wife.
She just left this morning on a trip for 5 days to Pennslyvania with my Daughter.
They just called and all they can say is its Great....they can find everything they need from gas stations to resturants no matter where they are.
Bought it at circuit city for $499 the other day online....
Can't say much for the in-dash route but I've gone through quite a few on-dash units. I have a PDA (Zire 72 w/DeLorme Bluelogger) as well as a Tom Tom Go 300 and then a Garmin Nuvi 350.
The PDA was great for a few years but the new systems are GREAT! The Tom Tom is excellent for the money but I think the Garmin is the best due to some of the features. My favorite perks are it tells you the name of the street to turn onto and it's size, real small but a decent screen. I like being able to swap between cars. If they could mix some of the features from the Tom Tom with the Garmin they would have the perfect GPS!
Just got back from a 1000 mile round trip vacation trip and put them both on the dash side by side. They pretty much give the same directions except the Garmin sometimes tells you NOT to get off the highway on a major upcoming exit. The Tom Tom however tells you with an arrow which way you'll be turning next. Also the Tom Tom have a lot of info you can put on the main screen, speed, heading, time to go, time elapsed, time etc. The Garmin has a trip computer that is cool, tells you what your max speed was, average speed, average moving speed, time stopped etc. The Tom Tom boots up quicker and gets a lock on satillites quicker. Still, I like them both and each has its strong point.
Uncrate just released their reccommendation today for the Garmin StreetPilot i5. It's between $300 US or so. Has North America inside the unit, and some neat features. Pretty good reviews as well: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...616162?ie=UTF8
