Canada Cruise Control Surge

Hello,

I posted a question about this in another thread and only got one response (I appreciated the response but needed someone with an A/T as well) so I thought that I would try to reach the masses with this thread.

Basically I am finding that with the cruise control on if the car drops even a km/h (on very slight hills even) below the set point my Base Matrix w/ A/T drops a gear or two and revs to 4 or 5k. This seems ridiculous and I know that I have been other cars with an A/T that don't do this.

I talked to the dealer and got a BS excuse about the engine having a fly-by-wire throttle system and therefore couldn't have precise control. I am not professing to be an expert by any stretch but I took a controls course in Univ. and this doesn't seem like a hard problem to fix with a bit of programming. They said that this is the way things are going and that I will just have to deal with it. He said a lot of people complain about this but there is nothing they can do. Frankly, I expected at least a better excuse about this but it seems that this could be much better designed. I know fly-by-wire isn't new technology (maybe to Toyota I am not sure but not to other companies like VW) so I would have thought that any kinks would be out of it.

Anyway a bit of a rant but is anyone out there having the same problem and have you come up with a solution? As it stands now I am using it on flat ground but am forced to turn it off if I see a hill coming.

cheers,

Brian

Well my matrix is manual, so I don't have that problem, but it did have the exact problem with my 01 Dakota. I did the same, brought it to the dealer, cause it just didn't seem right for the truck to kick back 2 gears, race the engine almost into redline to get up a small hill.
Anyways, what I started doing in my truck when I noticed a hill or any incline, I would manualy turn the OD switch to the "OFF" position, and it wouldn't downshift.
I think the Auto Matrix has that little button on the shifter aswell right?

sorry it has been awhile since i even tried this. I actually found that the cruise seemed to "adapt" to the way the car behaves under throttle. So it hasn't been as much of a problem as it was at first. Maybe I am crazy but that is what seems to have been happening.

cheers.
