2003 Matrix help - what is this squeaking?

I have a 2003 Matrix XR.
I have noticed the past ewek that my car is squeaking....As soon as I turn it on it starts and the pitch changes when I apply the gas. Could this be the serpentine belt?? If not, what does it sould like to you?
Anyone replaced one before?? Can you do it without taking out the engine or should I just take it to the mechanic?
A little background...got it in May 2002 and it has 54,000 miles.

Thanks!

Once you're warmed up and the squeaking is gone? if so, it's the serpentine belt. Replacing it would take less than 30 minutes and no engine remove is required .

No, the noise doesn't go away when the engine is warmed. It does this all the time. I noticed it a couple of weeks ago...it would only squeak when it was humid or had just rained....now it does it all the time.

I wonder if your AC compressor is seezing up?

Does it still happen when your AC is OFF (and your cabin selector, that dial thing next to your hot and cold selector, is not pointing to the window options).

Could be the belt tensioner also...

That could be possible and if thats the problem, you will have to buy a new one. At $500, plus the cost of installiation, they are not fun to fix.

This is, unfortunatly, a pretty common problem for the Matrix. Our belt tensioner is weak. Take it to the dealer, and have them inspect the belt and tensioner. Or, you can try to DIY. Check out matrixowners.com and search for squeaky belts, and you will find the DIY fix for the tensioner. Best of luck.

I finally took mine into the dealer and they replaced the belt under warranty. NO more squeeking when it's rainy, damp or humid.

I have seen that alot of times it is just the belt tensioner pulley bearing worn out. If the tensioner is in good shape, I would recommend replacing the belt tensioner pulley and go with a Goodyear Gatorback belt! That is just my two cents worth.
