So i just found out that my 2003 xrs needs premium only cuz of the high compression and what not. I bought my car used a few days ago. It has 50,000 miles on it and was used by 1 other owner who leased it. My concern is that since the person leased it, they probably put only regular gas in it. Do u guys think there could be any damage to my engine if the person did run it on regular gas for 50,000 miles? Also, do I have to use premium every time or can i throw a random tank of regular in there once in a while?
If you tend to do a lot of spirited driving, i.e. high rpm, shift @ redline, drive-it-like-you-stole-it, you'd best stick to premium. You can get away w/ lower octane but go easy on the lead foot.
I bet a lot of first generation Matrices were filled up w/ regular by the dealership. Heck, I wouldn't be suprised if dealerships were still filling up 06 XRS' w/ regular.
Like he said, if you do some spirited driving, then start putting in premium, you will notice a difference. Not too many dealers have high octane premium on the lot. My Acura dealership certainly didn't and every Acura is supposed to be run on premium. So much for that
But if you are concerned about damage, do one of two or both things. Take it to a oil change/lube shop and have them run and injector cleaning through the car. Cleans out the whole system. Or just buy a bottle of Valvoline Complete Fuel System Cleaner. Not just for the injectors, read the labels it says COMPLETE.
Also a good habit to get into is to toss a bottle of this in around every oil change when you need to fill up again to keep it clean as well.
Well I figured it in at 40 litres/per week at +$0.10/per litre x 50 weeks = $200/year. Small price to pay for the exhilerating thrill of the 2zz. After 2 years, I'm more than happy with it.

You are so right! The salesman that sold me my 2006 XRS in May of this year admitted to me when he handed over the keys that he filled her up with regular...it has had premium ever since...so I can't imagine I would need to reset anything...at least I don't think so...
Hell, I asked my dealer if the XRS took regular or premium, and he told me regular. I was testing him out a bit, because I already knew it took premium. There are many salespeople who know very little about the cars.
the xrs has a really high compression ratio of about 11.5:1 so the it needs to the higher octane to combust correctly......in your xr the 91 will probably only give you a little better gas mileage and keep your engine cleaner...in the xrs if you drive it hard on regular all the time the ecu will change the air fuel ratios because of the dirty gas and the engine will start pinging and knocking and run like crap
i ran into a broad at a gas station putting 87 in her celica gts- had the car 5 years and never once put anything other than the lowest she could get.... i'd just put 91+ and hope the previous owner took care of it
the bit about salesman not knowing anything is completely true, i work at a dealership and ask them any question about a car other than the obvious and they're thrown in a loop, its sad really, and oh yea about the regular and premium, people need to read their manuals and the little stickers on their car they are there for a reason if u buy car that runs on premium then run premium u cheap bastard, if anything u'r probably wasting more money running reg because ur getting worse mpg, so stop being jewish...no offense to any jews in here.
My 2006 XR runs so much better on Premium than on Regular, that I don't use anything other than Premium. However, I was in NJ, where they don't let you pump your own gas, and the stupid guy at the pump started putting in Regular when I specifically asked for Premium. I yelled out to him after he had already filled the tank about halfway. So he stopped and filled the other half with Premium. Seemed to run fine on 50% Regular/ 50% Premium, but I wouldn't do that by choice.
i did experiment to put the mid octane into my XR and it did run better than before, as soon it get empty, i will fill it up w/ 91 octane and see if there's a big difference to it
will keep you posted...
