Camry is a nice quiet, don't know your driving kinda car.
Matrix XR AWD is an economical (for AWD), versatile, wagon. If it weren't the AWD, I'd also say fun to drive or if an XRS hang on to your pants kinda driving car.

It's a strange comparison because they're completely different. It's not as easy as comparing the Matrix to a Mazda 3 or a Dodge Caliber.

There's more power on tap out of that Camry vs the 4WD Matrix. Fun factor, the Matrix wins hands down. Your kids (depending on age) would agree w/ that. When my wife isn't in the car, my girls like having the pass. seat folded down so they can see straight through the front of the car. Utility-wise, the Matrix wins as well. You can put a lot of crap in there especially w/ the seats all folded down.

i don't know how the insurance rate works there in Canada, i guess it depends on how would you use it. Would you believe my Matrix insurance are higher than my Porsche Boxster, coz I would put more mileage in my trix' than the bxstr that's what they thought..hehehehehe! reliability, can't comment on that but i think they are both the same when it comes to that subject

Tough to say which would be cheaper. Why don't you just ask your ins. co. for a quote for both?

I'd say the Camry. Having kids, you'd need all the room you can get. The Camry has a much larger cabin. Tons of leg room in the back. It also has a fairly large trunk where you can throw in strollers and other crap. The Matrix IMO, is more cramped.

^I'll disagree about the cramped part. I've had a few co-workers over 6' tall sit comfortably in the rear. You also have much more head clearance because of the higher roofline.
