A few months ago I had asked a question in regards to switching my brand new 06 Matrix XRS to Synthetic Oil...I got some great responses...Anyway when I purchased the car they threw in 5 years free oil changes...so obviously if I wanted to use Synthetic I would have to pay out of pocket for it ( no big deal! )...Anyway my car is at about 6200Kms right now and I phoned to make a service appointment and the service dept said that Toyota doesn't recommend using Synthetic Oil until the engine breaks in at 50,000kms...has anyone evere heard this recommendation before? Also I enquired about the price of Toyota's Synthetic Oil from the dealership and they told me it was $75 (CDN) for 4 Litres...Your thoughts are greatly appreciated!!
Wait until 50K?! They're smoking some good stuff over there. Throw it in. Your car's broken in already.
Yes, $75 for a synthetic oil change at Toyota sounds about right. I'm gonna assume that your deal of free oil changes won't include synthetic.
I typically buy my Mobil1 elsewhere wherever it's on sale like Canadian Tire or Walmart for around $28-30 and have the dealer do it for $25. Works out to be cheaper than what they charge if you buy the oil from the dealer.
I don't know who you were talking to, but I think they are misinformed. I'm just picking up my new Matrix on Thursday and after the initial break in kms I'm intending on using Synthetic all the way. I've done it with my other cars and motorcycles and I can tell you that it really makes a difference. There are times I've changed the oil where it looks almost as clean as the day I put it in.
since we are in the topic, i got a question...i changed my oil and the filter yesterday. I use Mobil 1 synthetic oil and mobil 1 filter, i didn't realized till the last drop of the bottle that it's a 10w 30 not the one that is recommended by Toyota, w/c is 5w 30....
Should be fine, uncle. Just switch over on the next interval. Because you live in a warmer climate, it might actually be better for you to run the 10W30 vs. 5W30.
that's exactly what pep boys clerk said when i went back there to disposed my old oil plus he said it could last for 6k before my next oil change...thanks, mista! you rock!
oh yah and i change my brakes too, i use the ebc brand (green one) and that sucker is expensive but they works really good, i tried it in the parking lot. i hope it last longer than the regular brake
Thanks for the responses folks...when I had purchased the vehicle and they said they would throw in free oil changes I had asked the salesman if down the road I wanted to switch to Synthetic if they would still do it for free...he said of course...you will just have to bring your own oil then...now it seems as though the story has changed...typical I guess when someone is trying to make a sale...but really I don't think it should make a difference if they are changing Synthetic or regular oil if I bring my own Synthetic...so I don't get why they want to charge me now...My salesman also held a bumper protector hostage that he had promised me saying unless I gave him and the dealership a positive survey feedback he wouldn't honor the free bumper protector...I am considering contacting Toyota Canada's head office to inform them of this dealerships tactics...I wonder what they would have to say about it...anyway I gave them 90% positive feedback...and still no bumper protector...All I know is that I am buying Toyota's from now on...just not from this dealership...

They're idiots. They're actually benefitting if you went synthetic. Tell them to think about it...if you maintained using regular oil, they're using their supply of oil + offering the service. Now if you brought it in your own oil, they wouldn't have to dig into their oil supply, just the service.
Hey guys,
My dealer guy told me regular oil last 5K and synthetic oil is 10K but he said just change the oil filter when it hit 5K. He also recommend Royal Purple synthetic which last 15K but again just have to replace the oil filter every 5K . Is that right ?
The only concern with synthetic oil is that it is slippery and reduces heat and friction. Engine needs heat and friction during break-in for piston and rings to seal properly. However, the engine is pretty well broken in at 8000 miles or so.
I switched to synthetic at 10,000 KM (around 7,000 miles). Now at 24,000 KM and car runs much smoother. My dealership told me the same thing to wait until 30,000 KM atleast. I told them to mind their own business and switch to Mobil 1 synthetic that I supplied to them.
I will be switching to synthetic redline transmission oil in the next 6 months as well.

I've never heard anyone recommend changing the oil filter at 5k intervals and the oil at 10k. Sounds ludicrous to me..... Yikes, now I getting worried about Toyota Service since I'm only getting my 2007 Matrix on Thursday. I went through stupid crap like this with the VW Dealer whose service guys were total morons. They made stupid mistakes and nickel and dimed you to death.
Are others experiencing this type of craziness????
I gotta agree with frank, just follow the owners manual of 6 months/8000km, or sooner regardless of synthetic or not (especially while car is under warrenty). I switched mine over to synthetic at the dealership at 16000km and they didn't say anything. I definatly wouldn't do it right away but by the 3rd oil change there shoudn't be a problem switching to synthetic
