take a test drive if you are serious

it really depends on what you consider fast

I agree with hachi. Its fast in its own respect(talking about the xrs since thats what I have) But its no match to a wrx or evo. If your lookin for pure speed, perhaps the matrix is not for you. Its a functional car, not a sports car. but as close to both as you can get in my opinion. But the xrs is probly hard to come by nowadays

It sure seems to hit freeway speed in no time. official times ive seen are around 7.5 seconds I believe. And I've gotten to 125 before my commen sense came back to me. And theoretically in 5th gear should hit 140 or 145 if you disable the 130 limiter...again talkin the xrs here.

Agreed. Fast is relative. If you're comparing to it's little brother, the Yaris, it's certainly fast. If you're comparing it to a 911, then no, it's not fast at all. Besides, why does everyone focus on going fast?

Remember....straight lines are for fast cars, turns are for fast drivers.

i would say it has a decent acceleration. I drive it 100mi. everyday and i really love it during rush hour where I could go in and out of the traffic (in a safely manner) w/ confidence. The only mod's I did is change the air box into TRD CAI, Magnaflow exhaust and use (76 station only) 91 octane and Mobil 1 Synthetic Oil and Oil Filter. you don't need to use 91 on XR but i just like using it coz' it makes a difference on the throttle and it clean up my engine too...that's just my 2 cents

I totally agree with george....can't compare it to our Boxster although I would love to use it everyday but my yellow rocket would do fine..hehehehehe!

In a word, no. It's not going win any drag races, unless you're racing a Yugo or a Chevette, but it handles well.

My 1984 POS Ford LTD I built is waaaaay faster 0-60, but can't corner to save it's life.

I love my 2003 xrs....for what it is, it is a str8 sleeper. No riced out integra or honda expects you to crush them. Mine is stock right now and i'm so impressed with the power. The only gripe is that i wished it had a lil more torque for the any where power. Otherwise, if you know when to downshift u can really whip it around.

I have an 2003 xrs and it is fast. I put on a cold air intake and it made enough difference to where I can shift all the way to 6th gear while keeping the cams lifted. If you are at sea level, it is faster, I could spank stock wrx's and mustang GT's and it goes all the way to 140. The engine isnt what allows this car to go fast, its the transmission. HOWever, there is a catch. I am back in colorado now and it does poorly in high elevation. Just as an example lets just say that all cays loose 10% performance at 5000 ft, well It seems that the matrix looses like 20% performance. The elevation just kicks its ass, so if you live at sea level, go for a xrs, or if possible, get a used celica-gts since it weighs 600 Lbs less than a matrix which weights a little below 3000 Lbs.

Care to elaborate on how you "spank Mustang GT's"? I find that hard to believe, considering the GT's are 4.6l v-8s putting out 300hp and 320 ft-lbs, compared to 1.8l 164hp and 125 ft-lbs. 0-60 in ~ 5.6s and the qtr mile in ~ 14.2s @102 mph. If you can spank this, you've got one fast Matrix or one very effective CAI.

I'm not a real fan of Mustang's, but let's be reasonable ....

Well it was a 2000 or 2001 it think. You have to remember power isn't everything. Mustangs are usually around 3500 lbs, plus theyre already stuck in 5th gear by the time you hit 4th with an xrs 6speed. The best thing about the matrix when it comes to speed is the 6 speed, not the engine. Ive taken it up to 140 several times while most 5 speeds arent geared to go that fast.

So what you are saying is when you shift your rpms only drop about 900 and you are always in lift?
