Yes, it will make a difference if it is not the same. Typically, people upgrade to wider rims and an offset that gives the car a wider stance.
What are the dimensions and offset of your new rims?
I need to save some $ so going with 15in ugly steelie rims. Dude at Tire shop can only get ahold of rims with
45mm offset. Winter tires are 195 65 R15.
My stock rims have 39mm offset....... assures me no problem with steering ???? I gave him your spec sheet so I hope its a good match. I would hate to lose control and run into a cow or moose or logging truck.
They are witer tires, it's going to handle like crap anyways.
It will take a bite out my cornering. Hey dude winter in Canada is a cosmic joke played out in dramatic fashion. I'm going to test some BF Goodrich Blizzaks paws. Probably noisey on dry pavement. Was tempted to go with X ice but the treadwear would be dramatic since I travel gravelly back roads to a Destination Ski Resort (Sun Peaks).

I don't get it, are you trying to say winter tires handle well, or that they don't?

# of questions.
i really don't know jack squat about upgrades.
but pertaining to this thread, people are asking about rims.
on my '06 xr i got the 17" alloy rims.
i was thinking about upgrading to my girlfriends 18" rims she got from toyota when she bought an '05 celica (which she traded in now) but just as a cosmetic look for now while i'm still stock until i find rims that i like myself.
after reading through posts about sizes and offsets, i'm not clear as to what all of those numbers mean that mistamatrix posted with an attachement, can someone explain to me as to what they mean, even in general terms, doesn't have to be about matrix sizes.
also, i've heard that when you get bigger rims you need to reset 'something' with the computer because your speed and odometer will not calculate correctly, is that right?
if so, how do you reset or fix that problem, is it something that can be done yourself (me being newbie)
any other knowledge about this topic would be greatly appreciated.
please respond.
thanks!
Still have't cleared up the offset issue and how my handling will be changed. My new rims have increased off set 6mm... I know a guy who claims to be a wizz at calculus and can do front end alignments without a computer I will ask him about the offset. Stay tuned to thread!
Cheers

First of all, you usually want to keep the overall outside diameter of your OEM wheels/tires. Therefore, your odometer/spedometer won't change. In other words, if you go from 17" to 18" wheels, you basically want a tire with a 1/2" less side wall. If the new wheels are 8" wide, then you also want a wider tire also. The offset will also need to be changed. For a Matrix, 18" x 8" wheels with a 35 offset is just about perfect.
You can read and study all about wheels n tires here:
Just punch in your before specs and after specs to see what the difference is. In your case, your before specs (OEM 16") is 16" x 6.5" and 39offset.
What is the width of your 15" steelies? The width of the rim also determines if your rim is going to pushed out or away from your car (increasing/decreasing stance), not just offset alone.
well the other part of my question in my last post was if you buy a bigger (or smaller) size rim, do you still need to reset something, or calibrate the computer to know the difference.
because if you go with a bigger rim wouldn't it take a longer revolution for a 18" rim than a 17".
just stuff i need to know because i have no clue as to how this works. so please excuse my pestiness. thanks!
