03 Matrix Stereo just upped and DIED

Hello everyone my name says it all .
I have an 03 matrix. All was well until about a week ago i popped in an audio cd like i always do, but this time my stereo made a weird noise and ejected the cd. It hasnt played an audio CD since. when i insert a disc, i hear a sound like its trying to read but stuck. I can tell that the CD isnt being spun. i have used a laser lense cleaner but that didnt work probably for the same reason (the cd not being spun). Has anyone had this happen to them? The FM radio and everything else works fine, i have tired disconnecting my car battery but that didnt help. Can i attempt to fix this myself or do i need a dealer?
thanks everyone.

Your bumper to bumper warranty may be over, by now.

Just buy a used one (~$40), from someone who upgraded their deck.

Just buy an aftermarket

Don't bother with the factory one - it sux. I got my JVC MP3 player installed by myself last week. All you need is a deck kits and wireharness for 03/04 model - you can get them at Wal-mart or Canadian Tire (in Canada)

Kanata_Matrix, when you installed your jvc unit, i was just wondering if the mounting area for the unit is for a single din only, or is it a din and a half? i went to a autoshow recently and i saw a stereo shop have a '03 matrix setup with a nav system in place of the stock unit. so i was thinking that it was a double din, but i doubted it.
later on after engine upgrades i'd like to work on the stereo, so your input would help.
thanks.

I feel your pain. My stock head unit is dead, too. I am looking at buying the JVC KD-G720 model, which has the USB port for additional MP3 capabilities (hey, it is faster and cheaper than constantly burning MP3 CDs). Is this the JVC stereo that you are referring to in your post? Also, is there anyone else here who might be familiar with this model? If so, what do you think of it?

The stock Matrix headunit should be 2-DIN, if I'm not mistaken.

I'd also like to know how to install a 1-DIN headunit into a 2-DIN slot, and what I need to buy/install to fill the gap.

Someone? ANYONE?

the reason why i was asking kanata the din size is because if you go to crutchfield.com and click on the 'what fits my car' they only show single din head units. so that made me believe that the matrix is only 1 din. but at the auto show i went to in the aftermarket parts area, someone fixed up a matrix and had that double din dvd touchscreen in place of the radio, and a single din on the bottom of that. it was all right in place of where the radio area is. i'll try and post a pic when i get home from work. (if i have it)

redline, i have a '96 gmc jimmy and all or most gm car radios are a din and a half.
i bought a dvd player with flip up screen and they installed a harness to make it fit like a single din. again as a reference, go to crutchfield and click on 'what fits my car' and i think they can sell you a harness to make it fit like a single din.

Double din

Hey guys,
Sorry haven't been on for a while. Yes it is a double din. I bought the deck installation kit at Canadian Tire and it pretty easy to follow instruction since you only have to cut a few plastic clip per instruction. I guess since it can be used in a different cars like GM, Honda, and Toyota.

http://www.canadiantire.ca/browse/pr...=1163086022688

Hope this help. How do I post pic on this forum ? If I can I will take pics and show you the installation process. If you in USA Wal-mart should has a similar product.

And MatrixNoob - if you want the stock stereo - you can have mine for $20 plus shipping.

Peace out guys
