03 XRS Operating Instruction Manual

First post please be nice Just got a smokin deal on an 03 Matrix XRS. Out the door for $4k under sticker with 3yr extended bumper to bumper platinum warranty.

Right now my questions are about the radio that the salesman wasn't able to answer. I have a double din AM/FM/SingleCD/Cassette. He said it was 7 speaker? I counted 6. Is there a sub hidden somewhere? Not feeling it if there is. If not, does this radio have line level output to add amps/subs? Does this stereo have aux input, or is there any aftermarket adapter to add it?

Another quick question- can't seem to figure out how to dim the dash guage backlighting? Does dimming only work when you have the headlights on?

Thanks
Mike

Must be 6 speakers (my XRS has 6 speakers). Maybe different for the Matrix or just sales people are known to say anything to sell a car.

As for gauges, on my XRS, there is a vertical dial on the left of steering wheel beside the tire pressure gauge that allows to dim or brighten the electronic gauges. There must be something similar in your Matrix.

As for the headlights, no brightness cannot be controlled by the driver.

Speaker locations.

The 7th speaker would be on the passenger side in the hatch area (subwoofer).

The 7th speaker (aka subwoofer) wasn't available in 03-04. I don't think it wasn't introduced until 05-up.

I have the same stock radio. Really not worth investing much into it. Better off swapping in a new head unit.

yeh, if you look at that pic, you only see six speakers, I only have 6 in my 03, which is what that pic goes to. I am going through the same toyota certified mechanic manual and organizing it and its for an 03 xrs.

Sorry about that. I have a 2006, which explains my misinformed post.

I absolutely love the radio in mine. I upgraded to the JBL 6 CD in-dash with the
subwoofer.

Thanks for all the info. I figured out the dimmer for the guages. Another question about the radio-

The EQ... Can you only change one of the presets? Are the others fixed? Holding the EQ Button down brings up on the display "Select EQ#", what mode does this activate?

Re. EQ, yes, I think only one setting is programmable. The others are preset.

Just figured out that all six are programmable:

1. Use tone controls to setup Bass, Mid, Treble.
2. Hold the EQ button til you hear a beep and see "Select Eq#" on the screen.
3. Turn the Adj dial to select any preset 1-5.
4. Hold the EQ button again til you hear the beep and see "Eq Saved" on the screen.

Eq zero (blank) is adjustable via the tone controls, making all six programmable!
