Caution to those who put on high flow air filters, or performance intakes

If you ever read my posts about idle issues you would recall that I had problems with my car's rpm's dipping well below 900 or completely stalling. So after searching for what could be the cause I did too things. First I took off my MAF( which apparently was being held in place by only one screw, instead of two) and that helped the idle smooth out and gave me a little performance boost actually. Then my next thing was the idle air control valve. This is the valve that provides air during idle when your throttle body is completely closed. I tried to buy one but they run anywhere between 200 and 400 dollars. $200 for a pontiac vibe or $400 for a matrix, go figure that one out. Thankfully they cancelled my order so I was desperate enough to just attempt to clean it out. Anyway I was amazed at the dirt inside this thing. If anyone has fired a rifle enough to get the bolt to seize, this is what it looked like on the inside. Of course my CAI was to blame since it does not clean the air very well. how it operates is so simple, mine had a rotating cylinder that had a plate attached that adjusted to let in the right amount of air. Before I cleaned it, when I spun it it would immediately stop, hence the stalling. However after I cleaned it, it would sping freely and actually do around 7 rotations. To clean it I just faced the chambers to the ground and sprayed the same electronic cleaner I used on the MAF upwards into the IACV and it pretty much loosened all the debris and rinsed it out. So if you guys have performance intakes/filters, check this if you have rough idle, your rpms dip below 900 or if your car stalls. I cant even tell that my engine is on if I just had to feel for it because it is so smooth

NOTE: I have a 2003 matrix xrs with 95K on it. There is one problem with all of this that I would like some input with. I downloaded a 2003 matrix technical manual( same one dealerships use) and IACV and its connector it not the correct part. In the manual and at the dealership, they say that the idle air controller for my car is part number 22270 0d040. However, the IACV on my car is 22270-22040 or something like that, which with a kemparts directory I found it was used in toyotas for 2000-2001. So I am thinking maybe someone replaced it before and found that the part in my car now fit on the throttle body just fine and that it used the same analog signal from the ECU. However the diagram also shows that the OEM IACV used a two-wire connector. Mine has three, so I also thought that whoever replace the one I have jury rigged a three connector on the stock wires. However all three wires are attached into the wiring harness, I find it hard to believe that someone would have have attached the extra wire instead of just cutting it off. So anyway. whoever has a 2003 matrix, could you go to your throttle body and look at the bottom of it, you will see a black attachment with two coolant hoses attached to it that point parallel to the vehicle. If you could, could you find out the part number(might need a mirror) and let me know whether you have a 2 or 3 wire connector(the connector will actually be closest to the front of the vehicle) I really regret not taking pictures through all this.

Update

Well I got some more information about the Idle Air control Valves, turns out there are about 5 possible Valve tpes; 50 state legal, 49 state legal, 48 state legal, canadian and japanese valves. All of them with different part numbers. Also it didnt fix my problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It worked just long enough to give me the illusion that it fixed the problem. Turns out it can also be the PCV valve or the hose that goes from it to the throttle body, I will clean them and take pictures this time, apparently the PCV valve is suppose to rattle like a spray paint can when its functional.

Another problem for those of us who installed CAI's. Turns out the stock intake has 3 seperate bungs for hoses. The main thicker one which they always have to connect to the intake pipe and two others, one that vents with the block and one that connects to the charcoal canister system. Turns out when mechanics install CAI's they just rip out the two smaller tubes and discard them

Back to the main problem of my car stalling, after they drove it for an hour they couldnt get it to stall. So I took the guy driving around in desperation and on the last stop before the dealer it finally stalled, turns out ive got a pressure leak, most likely due to the two missing hoses, which I will install into the intake pipe tomorrow. I will take pics so you guys know what to look for just in case you have the same two hoses just ripped out.
