I believe it has something to do w/ short tab that keeps it from popping open. The newer one has longer tabs to lock in place.
See your dealer and ask for the following TSB: SERVICE BULLETIN:02303 NHTSA ITEM NUMBER:10005832
MFG Bulletin Date: 20031202 Component: STRUCTURE:BODY Bulletin Summary: CENTER CONSOLE BOX WILL NOT STAY CLOSED. *TT Date added to datbase: 20040316
Now you can receive the same Full TSB Content that Dealers get for ALL Service Bulletins ever issued for this model car plus ALL Bulletins issued for the next 12 months.
I have a 2003 Matrix, as does my brother. Both suffer from this annoying problem. I'm contacting the local Toyota dealer to see about getting it fixed. Can't say why I've waiting so long, since this problem cropped up when this thing was new. It's one of those problem that's easy to ignore until it happens the 3196th time.
The compartment on my '03 has exactly the opposite problem. It won't open...I have to get my fingernails behind it while pushing the button to open it.
