Safety in NYC

Hello, my name is evasivebutcher I chop meat, I like long walks on the beach and reading Daniel Steel novels by the fireplace.

Recently I bought a used 2004 Matrix (base model), 52k highway miles and right now I am struggling with a decision of what sort of security system to get. It's a well known fact that safety is sometimes an extravagance, naturally I am not entirely comfortable with that. Being that I live in NYC and park on the streets, I have to take into account the meanness of the NYC streets and the irrational spirit of an average immature male who is driven by the force of horsepower, loot and danger.

I am not very well informed when it comes to cars or their security, so I would greatly appreciate any advice on what security system I should invest in. Club, lojack, thingy- shmingy? Thanks a million.

It all depends on how much money you want to put into it.

Cheapest option is something like a club-brake devices:

Next would be your basic car alarm that disables the ignition (availble at any auto shop). Just make sure they guarantee both the hardware and labour for the life of the vehicle.

Finally, keeping things simple of course, would be a "two way" remote alarm. You would be notified, if your are within range, that your alarm went off.

I'm pretty sure that the immobilizer (i.e. computer chip inside key) came in on the 2005 and up models....

Thanks very much for your suggestions. I am pretty certain that the 2004 doesn't have the immobilizer, I wouldn't worry much if it did. I do have a full coverage insurance so I would assumme that most mishaps or misfortunes will be covered.

The main concern here of course, is the question of money and I don't have lots of it, so my decisions must be practical and economical. I spoke to my mechanic and he suggested not to use anything except for the club. I don't have any exceptional features in the car worth being stolen. The stereo is basic and has a little red light flashing, I was told that it's coded which makes it very difficult to sell. I don't have a GPS (although I wouldn't mind having it), so technically the only valuable thing is the car itself. But if it stolen wouldn't the insurance be obligated to pay up?

No offense but I don't see the need in LoJack, the car is not a high-end luxury or sports with a ridiculous price tag. And if it is stolen it'll be used as a fun ride and I don't want a beat up vehicle to be returned to me.

I am basically reasoning here and still not sure about what to do. I love the idea of not chocking up more money but I also like the idea of security. Perhaps it is worth getting a basic alarm.

Forgive me, I am just rambling here like a typical dame. After plowing through this post perhaps someone can finally show me the light and help me make a reasonable decision? Thanks again.

I

once had a '85 pontiac grand prix stolen from my apartment complex in 1997. It was the ONLY vehicle that did not have any kind of alarm, and the complex was gated, too. It was stolen after 1100 PM and was in the police impound lot by 0330 AM. In that 4 hours or so, it was used to ram another car off the road (rival gang members), deliver a wounded gang putz to the local hospital, and then taken out into the boonies and set on fire.
I got to the police lot at about 0830 AM, and that car was burnt to a crisp.
Cop told me that thugs will throw a bag or two of potato chips onto the seats and light them on fire. The grease from that crap burns hot and ain't nothing left but the frame.
Since then, I at least have a basic alarm on my wheels. So, even if they are just kids that steel your car, you never know, ya' know.
Oh, one more thing. Some insurance companies are not paying off the full value of the loan, they use a "average" of so many of the same vehicle that are totaled and paid off, that's why GAP insurance from dealers is pretty good to have.
Maybe someone could elaborate on that ???
