This question has actually come up alot. FWD vehicles use drive axles. The AWD would have a drive shaft bolt to re-torque.

Can anyone say exactly how you access this bolt (i.e. where is it?) and what the torque spec is? I am planning to do my own maintenance and this is one of the questions that I have, also.

Cheers,
Bill

Question

Thanks for these docs!

Ok, maybe I'm just having a dumb day, but I can't find anything in any of those docs that's called a "drive shaft bolt". Can someone relate exactly which bolt/s - in the parts blow-up and torque listing - are the one/s that need to be re-torqued. I am interested in 4WD.

Thanks!

Look on the AWD Propeller Shaft doc I posted. Now look at the upper right hand side and you will see "73.5 (749, 54)" below the far right side of the drive shaft. The "54" is the tq in ft/lbs. Those are the 4 bolts that need to be addressed.

OK, now I don't feel so stupid ;-)))

In the Toyota Scheduled Maintenance and Service Guide it says:

"Tighten drive shaft bolt"

- and that's it.

When I cross reference the bolts you describe from the component diagram to the torque spec listing, we now find that the actual name for the bolts (yes, "bolts", not "bolt") is:

"Propeller w/center bearing shaft assy x Differential carrier assy rear"

It makes perfect sense to make sure those (four bolts) are tight, but the leap from "drive shaft bolt" to "Propeller w/center bearing shaft assy x Differential carrier assy rear" is not exactly intuitive.

Had to cut through some pretty thick fog to figure that one out ;-))))

Thanks, wantin150, for your help and patience!

Glad I could help. I have asked about the "Change Diffirential" oil for my XRS which is listed in the book. What they don't say is that this is not for me as I only have the manual tranny fluid to change. Without clarification, having multiple models listed in the same book is very confusing.

This is probably another "dealer take your money" kind of maint item.

So I'd be correct in assuming this does NOT apply to front wheel drive models?

Thanks

Nope. But verify with the dealer before you "neglect" it.

Yeah um. I searched for posts on the subject. I only found one. The poster couldn't really get an answer from his toyota serice department what exactly the 190 bucks was for. I'm not really sure if the poster had AWD. After having paid to replace the water pump on my 67 beetle, I'm a little wearing about asking a service department if I need this, that or the other if I don't understand what I'm asking.
