O2 sensor replacement

Hi Guys, I need some opinions...

my check engine light came on for about a week, then went off a day before I had scheduled an appointment at a Toyota dealership to get it looked at...I needed an oil change as well so I took it in even though the light had gone off.

after about 2 hours of waiting, I was told they "finally" finished pulling "a bunch" of codes off with the diagnostic computer, and had determined the O2 sensor went bad, causing the car to run at extremely rich oxygen mixes and it would kill my emissions system or something to that effect. And I needed a new serpentine belt, apparently cause it was "cracked" or something to that effect. I was told I should get this taken care of before driving around too much more.

Well, there was some confusion in their ordering of the new sensor and it's about 3 weeks later without the repairs, since I've been waiting to hear about this darn part. If it was so crucial to get these repairs...I'm wondering why my car is driving fine for one thing, and secondly why the check engine light has not come back on since it shut off earlier.

They're estimating something like $500 bucks for the repair (labor not included) and I'm wondering if it's really necessary...but I also don't want to find myself screwed on the side of the road somewhere either. It's an 04 with well over 60,000 miles so it's out of warranty now, sadly. I assume I can trust a dealership on this but I still don't know for sure.

Anybody have advice for me? Can anybody give me an idea of "how bad" my problems might actually be?

Thanks a ton.

It was my understanding that the emission controls may be warranted for longer (as per some federal law)....

Call another dealer and get the price of the Oxygen Sensor....
