What's That Burning Smell?

I'm at an intersection, my daughter's in the car with me. The light is about the turn green and I'm giving her a little gas to go. With the XRS' you have to get on the gas a little because when you let go of the clutch, rpm's will drop. Anyway, I'm anticipating a little and go a little half clutch action. As a start to go I smell a burning....my daughter immediately points out that I'm burning the clutch. I quickly dismiss her, telling her that I've been driving standards for 20 years and I know how to do it. Anyway, it happened again down the road. It's like I have to be extra careful not to burn it. When I was learning in the late 80's on my parents old Datsun 510 station wagon (4 speed manual)....I would be hard on that thing and never got that burning clutch smell.
Is this a bad sign that the clutch is going, or is it more normal that it seems? I bought the car with 19,000 miles and now have 26,000 on her. So it is possible that the person before me didn't know how to drive it. Hell, that may be the reason they traded it in. What's up?

Wouldn't the warranty cover something like that? I can at least take it in and get them to look at it. Worst case scenario would be them telling me that whatever is wrong was caused by the driver and would not be covered, but I would know what the problem is then.

Oil cap is off. I thought I had a problem with my Matrix, it had a real bad burning smell almost like a clutch even thought it was an automatic. Turns out the gas cap was off and all the raw fumes were blowin out the oil hole and coming inside.

Oh and I could really smell it when I came to a stop.
