Any windshield on any vehicle is going to get pitting over time - especially if you do a lot of highway driving. All vehicles throw up pebbles and other debris that become little bullets and, when they hit your windshield they leave pits. Highway driving just sandblasts - and pebble blasts - your windshield. Alot of it happens when it's raining and you just don't notice it at all. I do a lot of work on bikes and the rain really kills bikes as all of that "wet" stuff that comes off the road contains grit that just grinds away chains and drive trains. It's happenning to your car, too ;-( And, it's not just grit, but it's anything that gets picked up in a drop of water - including pebbles. Try riding a bike in the rain and, when you get home, see all the sand and fine pebbles that are all over your clothes. The small pebbles just don't stick. But, they will pit your windshield at high speed.
Given that your car is a 2003 and you are in L.A., it's not surprising that you have a lot of pitting. You can try searching on "window polishing" in this forum and other car detailing forums and find ways to polish your winshield. That being said, there comes a time in every car's life that it's just time for a new windshield. People taking a hammer to their windshield to create an insurance claim to replace the windshield and "fix" pitting is probably one of the top two or three fraudulent claim types. I just got rid of a 16 year old truck that had the original windshield and driving into the sun was just brutal.
It's a fact of life - they get that way.
