Atten Florida Matrix Owners

Got a letter from Cobra over the weekend saying that Flordia State Senator Stephen Oelrich has submitted a bill that would place a ban on radar detector use in the state of Florida.

Speed-measuring Devices: prohibits use of device that detect or interfere with speed-measuring devices used by law agencies; provides that enforcement must be secondary; provides penalties. Creates 316.1907.

The proposed bill states "A driver may not operate a motor vehicle on a street or highway in this state if the vehicle equipped with a device that is in operating condition and readily accessible for use by the driver or any passenger and that detects, jams, or otherwise interferes with the operation of a radar, as defined in s. 316.1906, operated by a law enforcement officer"

You may view the entire proposal here: http://www.myfloridahouse.gov/Sectio...8&Session=2007

We encourage you to take a few minutes to contact Senator Oelrich directly and let him know how you feel about this proposal. Please be sure to identify yourself, including particulars on your residence, detector ownership, driving record, and any other pertinent information.

Attached please find information that may help you organize your call, letter or E-mail. You might also take time to express your views on what you would like your Senator to work on instead of encroaching on driver's protection and freedoms.

Please call or send comments immediately to:

I could be wrong, but I believe this is pretty much what the law has been, in Connecticut, for a long time now. I believe you can get pulled over for even having one mounted on your windshield.

Anyone from Connecticut???

The point being, there is precedent in another state.

That's the law in all of Canada. Even if you unplug it quickly and stick it in your pocket, you are liable for a humungous fine!

Yup, I'm still living in the past. After I posted that, I found this:

http://www.afn.org/~afn09444/scanlaws/radar4.html

It actually makes note that a lot of people - like me - still think it's illegal in Conn. I believe that's because the Staties there were really militant about enforcement when the law was on the books. It was like - pulled over, big fine, detector confiscated, car towed, and off to the slammer. I have found that in MA and NH as long as you keep it under 75mph they will leave you alone. 76 and they will pull you over. So, I usually set the cruise at 73-74 and have driven past many Staties with radar guns. Of course, as they say, YMMV.

USA Radar detectors illegal? I think, NOT!

There are many laws, statuates that certain states feel they have passed and the citizens recognize. If they pass this "so called" law, I will just ignore it. Many government officials feel they have unrelenting power over law biding, tax paying citizens, and they feel that we work for them...when the reality is truly they are working for us. So the way I see it, I am their Boss, and as a citizen, I make the rules. I have driven in Connecticut, and Virginia, without removing my Whistler Radar detector from my dashboard. I would find it rather interesting if a cop attempted to reach his/her hand into my personal vehicle without probable cause, and then snatch out my radar detector, and then try keeping their current position as a cop. Let them try.
