I just took my Trix into the shop today for a noise I heard coming from the back end of my car when I stop. I really didn't think it was the brakes, but the dealership told me they saw brake dust and that it appears the rotors are wearing unevenly. I was told that this is due to normal wear and tear on a car. My car has 18,600 miles on it.
Can normal wear and tear on a car cause the rotors to wear unevenly?
yes unfortunately they can. the factory brakes they put on the trix arent the best, actually they are horrible. i have never had a car create so much brake dust. and i dont ride my brakes. i would replace them wiht ceramic brakes. they are the best.

^I disagree. I think the stock (4 discs on the XRS) are great. A common problem with the Matrix more so w/ the rear calipers is that they tend to seize and the pads gets somewhat stuck on the rotors. It happened to me in 2 yrs ago and I suspect it's happening to me again.

Your comments spawn more questions. I'm just curious, not in disagreement.
Do you disagree that ceramic (pads?) are not better?
What do you think seized? The pistions? And, is this a result of the brake dust?
I have found the brakes on my 06 XR 4WD to be very smooth and powerful, but I'm going to guess that they require regular inspection. I had a Toyota pickup before and that truck went through brake pads way faster than any vehicle I have ever owned. A fellow Tacoma owner asked me one day "do you go through brakes at a pretty high rate?" Yup.
I have heard a lot of people complain about Toyotas consuming brake pads at a high rate and it seems to be across the range of models. Does this jive with what you have heard?
All that being said, is there some way to properly clean the brakes to extend the pad and rotor life? I'd like to get better life out of my Matrix brakes than I did with my Tacoma.
I disagreed w/ the comment that the stock brakes are horrible. They perform really well despite the "problems".
Ceramic pads are often quieter than semi-metallic.
I am saying compared to other product out there the stock brakes on my trix arent up to par. But i have always been spoiled since my father owns a shop and get everything for cost. And on my XR i dont have 4 wheel disc, i have drums in the back, which i am not a big fun off. i mean they are okay but i would much rather have 4 wheel disc brakes.

Stocks are ceramic. It depends on what you define as being the best. Semi-metallic (Sintered) are a good compromise for all around driving. Best for track? Cold braking? Hot braking? Brake dust? Brake pad life? Too many variables.
hi mista, i think I have the same problem. Whener I move from the park position i hear a clunk or like a metal to metal sound, its 1 or 2 and the rest of the day is fine. It doesnt happen all time. Could it be the caliper not fully retracting to its open position??
It only happens in the morning when the car is parked overnight.. Throughout the day its ok..
