USA Moonroof/sunroof noise

Question for those of you who have the standard power moonroof (or sunroof, or whatever you want to call it). I have a 2005 XRS with the moonroof. When it is open (slid back, not tilted) there is a "spoiler", for lack of a better word that pops up in the front of the opening. From what I can tell when I am driving down the road, all that this thing does is make noise. I can reach up and pull it down, and things are significantly quieter.

So what is the purpose of this thing? If I just remove it or disable it somehow to make the ride quieter with the moonroof open, is it going to cause problems? Primarily, I am concerned about leaks, but from what I can tell this piece of plastic should have nothing to do with that.

Probably a dumb question, but it bugs me.

Thanks,

D Rock

Is it still under warrenty?
If so, bring it in. Somethings probably loose.

That plastic piece is a wind buffer.
It helps quiet the wind and keep it out of the car.

Kind of shitty explanation, but I've been typing all day and don't feel like writing a story....

And at higher speeds, without that wind breaker, you'l get a thumping or whopping inside the car.

I would have thought as well that it is supposed to make it quieter on the interior, but my experience is just the opposite. This weekend I taped it down and it was much quieter with the spoiler down.

Same problem with my dad's Matrix, he complained about it as well Toyota didn't have an answer.. I have the same problem with my Camry but not near as bad as the Matrix. I think youjust have to live with it, or hold you hand up and hold the "spoiler" down..which would look weird to other motorists on the road

You will not notice a difference while driving with the spoiler down, but if you have people in the back seats the whopping and thumping sounds is ear bleeding. but the thing is yo unever hear it. so if you dont have people in the back then take it out if you like it better down. there is not other function for that spoiler then that.

What noise is it? Wind noise? Rattle?
If it's wind noise, it's a moonroof...so wind noise is going to happen. Is it worse than most cars that I have driven....yes. My Solution: Get a wind deflector.

As for tapping down the spoiler, I tried it once and never again. All I can hear is the lift gate making a Whoop Whoop Whoop sound that gave me an ear ache.
