03 matrix transmission question

Hey guys. I posted about 6 months ago that my 03' base matrix had a bad clutch and/or transmission problem. 6 months and a new clutch, flywheel, and clutch lines later i found out that it has to be something with the transmission, maybe a bearing messed up.

My car is sitting in primer because i was going to paint it after an accident my ex had (also having to buy a brand new door) but when the transmission messed up, i couldnt even drive it to my shop to paint it.

My question is if anyone knows, or thinks even, that I could buy a used Celica transmission from a base/gt Celica or a Corolla one for that matter. They all run the same engine (with the xception of the 2zz xrs and gts) so essentially the tranny is the same right ? A long time ago I read that the Matrix actually gets more parts from the Celica than it does the Corolla, and I know that I could find a junked Celica that I can steal the tranny off of. I live in south florida and, as of now still, there are only 2 Matrix junked in the state. I got my door off of one of them, and all the engine parts are gone off of both of them from what I understand.

Has anyone here done, or heard of this being done before ? Should it be a straight bolt up thing or will I encounter problems ?

~ Thanks everyone

Hey guys, i was searching around the web and came across a forum where a guy asked a similar question. the c&p of that forum is as follows (with reply's included)...

" Anyone know why, specifically, the trans from the celica doesn't fit the matrix? I know it's the linkage, but does anyone know what is actually different about the linkage? Can I just swap the control levers, or is the casting different too?

RE: its toward the front of the car, while ours are toward the firewall. in other words, you need the celica's shifter cables too. but in reality theres not really any performance benifets other than availability. I was just thinking about this though i do know the celica GT drive ratio is different. The first two gears are the same as the XR. The only difference in third the ratios change. Then with the XR 4th gear it jumps to this huge gear, where as the celica is more close ratio'd.
The XR goes from 3rd (1.310) to a (.885) The celica's 3rd (1.392) goes to 4th (1.031). Then 5th gear in the XR is .725 where the celica is .815. I want to do a tranny conversion and would think that the celica transmission though probly doesnt have as high of top speed but will keep you within your power curve. Theres no doubt it would fit, im just curious to see if there are any sensors that are different and maybe cables "

So I guess it is possible, but does anyone know anybody who has successfully done it ?

Matrix Transmission Problems

I thought you might want to take a look at another bulletin board because there are several posts there about transmission porblems like the one you describe on these cars. The site is http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com My 5 speed transmision just went at 118,000 miles, which isn't what I expect from a toyota!
