I will need new tires for my 04 Matrix XR soon and I would like to change them from P205/55R16 to P205/60R16. With the 60R, when the speedometer reads 60 mph, I will be traveling at 61.9 mph according to the tire calculator site http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html which I feel isn’t a problem.
Could this change make the car unstable or cause premature brake failure?
The reasons I would like to do this:
(1) Make the car ride higher
(2) More rubber in the wheel well
The good news is that the 60 series profile tire will not effect your brakes. The slightly higher profile tire will have some degree of less stability in hard corners but you will have a softer ride. Unless you frequently push the envelope with your driving style you may not even notice the difference.
Okay, just curious. Why would somebody want to make the Matrix even lower than it already is? I mean, I have to be careful not to smash the front airdam when pulling up to a parking lot curb. Making it a bit higher would make perfect sense. Lowering the car would make it more prone to damage, and speaking politically correct...would make it look very ethnic.

my car is lowered for the fact that i autocross with it on the weekends. I love the ride on the highway better then the stock springs, and the dont have any issues with curbs. I have a 2 in drop all the way around on 17in wheels. no issues here. and my car doesnt look ethnic, it looks amazing and handles better then some high performance sports cars that are out there

how's the hotchkis setup, is it alot better than just the progress rear?
...still waiting on that rear bar, hopefully it gets here soon
btw,
"and speaking politically correct...would make it look very ethnic."
is not speaking "politically correct" , it's just over generalized which is even less "politically correct"

i dont know what he mines by ethnic, but i have an idea, and i an not happy it was mentioned but that is neither here not there. I love the hotchkis front and rear sway bar, i can take the hair pin at 75 with no squealing tires, and with very minimal body roll. the front sway bar did all the difference, the back feels about the same. but i love how this car handle, you can even explain it. the only thing that i think has come close as far as handling is a porsche, not even my neighbors bmw 3 series he got feels as good as mine car. which is awesome

I guess if the dingle-balls swing, one can't stop them. I was trying to be nice, and tone it down by using the sugar coated term "ethnic". I guess inner city people feel differently. So so sensitive. Im sure that lowering the car for autocrossing works to one's benefit for autocross times, but for practical use, ...sorry, it aint going to cut it in my book. I will leave mine at its stock ground clearance. I will not change the facts because somebody may be offended by my advice and experience. I prefer giving honest advice so that one may not make the mistake many others have. The end.

There will be no issues with you increasing your aspect ratio's from 55 to 60, assuming the tires will fit in the wheel well without hitting anything (which they should).
Effectively you are only raising your CG of the car by .41", gain .41" of ground clearance, and add the same .41" to the moment arm your tires imparts to your brake caliper (with a little more force due to the heavier tire). In other words, it is so little you will not even notice the difference. Your tire will be .82" taller than the tires you have on now, so it will fill the wheel well a little more, but that is the only effect it will have.

Well, if you really want to know...uhm, yeah. Sorry.
wow, my car is "ricey"
back on subject, you will not have any problems. You may have a bit more sidewall flex, but the brand of tires you get I'm sure will have more of an impact on the car more than a 5% aspect ratio change.
