please, help with Toyota part numbers nomenclature

I am looking for a steering rack gear for a 2003 Matrix for my friend, who is abroad.
He gave me his VIN and sent a parts diagram.
The part number on that diagram is 44204.
This part number results in no hits in online catalogs, including 1sttoyotaparts.com.
Also, if you ever worked with German cars, their part numbers are much longer.
I reckon, the part number I have is incomplete.
Is it possible to "complete" the part number I have (perhaps, using VIN) to make it a valid part number???

Any input will be really appreciated.

Thank you!

Toyota part numbers come like this for example: 90915-YZZA2. I'm guessing those are the first 4 digits of the part number. What do you mean by "steering rack gear"? Are you looking for the whole steering rack and all the other necessary components or just one component?

Are you looking for something like this?

I recommend doing a search on toyotapartsales.com and browsing through their Mechanical Parts Catalog, you may be able to find what you're looking for, good luck.

You should try posting this in the Matrix forum as well. Maybe another mod can move this for you.

humanoid, thanks for your replies. I was looking for part number 12 in the diagram in your link. I was able to navigate through the parts catalog, and also contacted 1sttoyotaparts.com people about this part. They replied fast and I ordered the thing on Friday.

thanks!

Since this is about nomenclature and phagus got his part, I'll just throw out some general observations:

The first half tells you what the part is. Within it, the first digit in the part number is general classifications -

0 - Special tools, service materials
1 - engine mechanical, air filters as well
3 - drivetrain, clutch etc.
4 - brakes
5 - interior trims
7 - interior trims, seat belt, restraint systems
8 - electrical stuff, switches, sensors, ECUs, etc.
9 - bolts, nuts, regular maintenance stuff
-- 90915 for oil filters
-- 90980 for electrical connector shells

The last five digits are variations on the part itself. For major components they would vary by the car itself.

The 5-digit P/N is called PNC (Part Name Code). The full P/N is 10..12 characters.

44204: RACK SUB-ASSY, POWER STEERING:

PNC's can be 5 or 6 digits (or letters).
Part numbers are 10 or 12 digits (or letters).

Sometimes the PNC is the first 5 digits of the part number, sometimes it isn't.

North American supplied parts do not follow this very well at all. I don't like them, they'll use 90080- for a bolt, and for a spark plug. . Ahh well, it's still a nice chart:
