Does anyone have any idea why Toyota wouldn't take the Matrix to that ""OTHER LEVEL" with perhaps a 2.3L engine and just make the XR model like the XRS and make it feel sportier... I mean, why the discontinuation of the speediness of the line?
You ask really easy questions… I forget who said it first but it’s the ultimate truth “Follow The Money!”. If Toyota thought they would make more profits by following your advice they would already be there. But believe it or not the number of motorheads out there where “when in doubt, bore it out” are much smaller than the number of those to whom a car is just an appliance. And I for one am perfectly happy with a 1.8L matted to a 5-speed.
Everyday, I wonder what Id get if I had an unfortunate mishap and had to replace this baby. Probably would get the Mazdaspeed3, but in 2 years, when I realistically look to replace it, that car won't be available. I'm still hoping Toyota or Honda will make a fast hatchback.
I totally agree with Memphis Matrix. I consider myself lucky to have found a brand new leftover 06 Matrix XRS. Great car. Not the fastest, but certainly not the slowest 4 cylinder car in town, and its a Toyota!
coool thanks guys! yeah, I love my '05 XRS and about a month ago my wife got an '07 XR! we couldn't be happier with our choice in vehicles... i still like my XRS because, yeah you're right it's definitley not the slowest 4-banger out there... enjoy those Trix-sters!

it seems as though you give really long convoluted answers.... good for you.
The statement was made, why doesn't Toyota take the Matrix to the next level with a 2.3L engine. I read that in the 09 Corolla, there will be an option to allow the customer a 2.4L Camry engine. Yeah, I know, its no XRS engine, but at least its kinda step in the right direction. At least one will have the choice of having some torque, if not even a bit of some horsepower in the next gen Corolla.

Not an XRS engine.....that may be good!....The camry engine in a matrix would be VERY powerful. My camry with the 2.4 and automatic moves pretty decent for a 3300lb car. In a 2800-2900 lb matrix with a 5 speed it would be almost FAST! The new SCION XB with the 2.4 weighs about 3050 lbs and with 5 speed does 0-60 in 7.8 seconds according to a recent carandriver test. so imagine knocking a hundred or so lbs off (( assuming toyota doesnt fatten the matrix as they usually do with new models)) and you will have a VERY quick little car.
I was doing the comparison to the 2.4 in the Scion Tc with the Matrix XRS. I figured that would be a pretty fair comparison in performance...meaning the XRS is clearly a quicker car, and tends to be more fun to drive, especially hitting lift. I am not knocking the 2.4 camry engine at all. It could make a big time difference in a lighter car like a Corolla. I just hope the new gen Corolla will not become overweight like the Tc is now.
