computer code po456

Hello,
My check engine light came on recently and the shop said it was a PO456 code, something to do with an evaporative system leak. They said the leak was very small and thought there was a service bulletin regarding this leak. Does anyone have any additional info about this code and where I can find a service bulletin?
Thanks, MT

p0456

due to government regulations, modern cars are equipped w/ evaporative emission systems. basically it controls and uses (burns via engine) any fumes generated by the fuel in the tank due to hot weather or other factors. the code p0456 relates to a leak in the system, usually below .020 of an inch big. its possible it could be from a loose gas cap. try reinstalling. the only other way to determine the source of the leak is to use a smoke machine to fill the system and find the source, which is special shop equipment and can take about 2 hours. hope this was informative. good luck

P0456. if you still have warranty. go and get the charcoal canister replaced. if a vacuum line near the air box or gas cap was loose. it would say GROSS leak detected. we replaced several canisters witht the P0456 code

smog stations can check your gas cap to see if it passes.. not sure if they will do it for free tho..

question for you RWD 3TC how do you come to the conclusion that the charcoal canister is bad? i get alot of evap codes at work as well and hate doing them since its always something different

I have changed the air filter - it was pretty dirty. Do I need to reset the check engine light now, or would it have gone off automatically if that was the problem?
As for the smog station check of the gas cap, we don't have those in MN but maybe there is another way to check it.
thanks, MT

To be certain, I'd reset the light by disconnecting the battery for about 15 minutes. That way if it comes back on, you'll know that wasn't the prob. Fingers crossed for ya!

USA Impact if po456 Not replaced

What impact on the performance of the Camry (in this case a 2005 4 Door) and or the operator safety if I did not replaing the cannister ??
Service Shop could not find any leak and just truned signal off. But stated that it would cost me $430 to repalce the canister if it came back-

these cars have a problem with corossion(well in canada at least)around the filler neck, where the cap sits, take thecap off and sand thetop of the filler neck a little(nothing too crazy just enough to rid the corrosion) then for adde seal lub the seal around the cap, clear code and try that if it still goes on you need the dealership, they have a machine that will pass smoke in the evap system and man, control the vsv's and see if smoke comes out of the evap box.
