299999 is the expiry of the matrix,, after that it will smell like a rotten egg...
toyota designed the odometer that way bec the matrix was not designed to last that long.. as you can see from the recent reliability survey, toyota has sliped down to 5th .
I've owned toyotas before , Corolla DX liftback, 92 Lite ace, 95 corolla they have been reliable cars. The matrix was the disappointment of them all.. Im afraid that Toyota is moving to the GM direction..
ive never heard of thia, but i do know that if it smells like egg we replace the cat and recalabrate the ecu, after that bang she starts and runs like new

That's interesting, Consumer Reports Magazine does not report Toyota's product reliability going down, in fact , they are still #1 or #2, jousting it out with Honda product reliability. I would have to imagine that your information is coming from a magazine sponsered by G.M., Chrysler, or Ford... just as in many of these "so-called" reliability reports, i.e. (J.D.Power and Associates) for initial quality.
i have heard that toyota is slipping on their quality. they are trying to push more through the manufacturing process, and in doing so, they start taking quality down a bit. the problem for toyota with that is that a toyota has been built upon the foundation of being so reliable. they do some occasional fast cars, but they arent so much of classy cars. the interior is nice, but certainly not the best, and they aren't the fastest cars, but traditionally they have had a very high longevity to them. with that going, i see toyota losing much of their customer base when the word spreads.
I've had 2 camrys till now. One was '92 Le, and this one that i have is '98 Le
On the firs one, the pass. side window, i had to replace the whole unit! i owned the car for 2 years, had 133.000miles on it, that was about it money wise on that car. I bought it for $2000, drove it for 2 year, and sold it for $2275
The newer one that i have, the '98 one i paid $6600 two years ago .... i already put around 1K on it for new RIMS(i had alloys, i bought those with hub caps, because with the alloys i had the car was vibrating like crazy), timing belt, water pump, brand new tires, brand new radiator, battery, all the engine belts, valve gasket, sparkplugs & wires, pcv valve ... what else!? o and now i'm having a problem with upper radiator hose(after i replaced it with brand new one) leaking ... I don't know, but for some reason they are still #1 around! I'm looking to buy a 2001 Camry so far, i love these models from 97 to 2001
ps: i still own the alloys, anybody want to buy them LOL
