The new lines are stadard, S, and XRS, with AWD being available with the S. I'm a little confused as I was told by a dealer that the AWD was discontinued because it brought the price up too high and wasn't that popular.

How is that upsetting? Thats a huge increase over the previous engine.

???????????
03 XRS = 180 hp
04 XRS = 176 hp
05+ XRS = 173hp
09 XRS = 158hp
The 2.4 moves a Camry along just fine, not blazing, but does quite a decent job. It'll make the matrix a much punchier drive.
Torque is what moves a vehicle ( i believe... correct me if i'm wrong). The 2.4 offers ~30% more torque at a lower rpm, closer to where most people drive.
Its always been a corolla matrix.......look at your car title......and the CAMRY motor will be MUCH better than either previous engine offered in the matrix....my 3300lb camry moves pretty decent with mild gears and an automatic...imagine it in a 2700lb matrix with a 5 speed!!!!
how upsetting...the new xrs is only going to have a camry motor.
DUDE you havent driven a camry then if you think that will be upsetting.......the camry has TONS more torque than either matrix engine.....put it in a car weighing 500-600lbs less and with a manual transmission and it will be hard to start off without laying rubber a good distance. I know the camry engine doesnt rev the same way..but thats a GOOD thing. Good low speed torque is what you need in this vehicle.!

You are CORRECT....torque is WHAT moves the weight..horsepower is JUST a calculation of the torque and at what RPM.....Basically high horsepower engines HAVE to be revved to have power, and they NEVER have low speed power. I have a matrix and a camry and my camry power gets very strong around 3000RPM ...but the matrix doesnt start to feel strong at all till about 4500RPM....and when you are starting out...it takes some time to hit 4000-5000 rpm..but 3000 comes up VERY fast....in the camry!..
And yes my camry ( with 2.4 liter 4cylinder) blows away my matrix in all situations
yes the camry motor has more torque, but there is also the rev and the gearing to consider. the 03-06 xrs has a rev limit of 8200 rpm, and if people do it right, a 6 speed close ratio transmission. i think that would push the matrix along faster than the 2.4 liter camry motor. even if the 1.8 liter 2zz is slower, i like it better just because of the high rev, and the lift.

But what we were comparing is the Matrix XRS vs. the Camry 2.4. I know my XRS can give a last gen V6 Camry a good run for it's money. From a roll, I'd say we're even. Eventually (only because the limiter is set much higher on the XRS), I'd take.
Bottom line, I agree thet the 2.4l engine should give the Matrix some nice power. I also believe it will be much easier to add a S/C or turbo to that engine and compete with the MSpeed3. I'll be there test driving one as soon as it's available.
I'll never get mine up to those RPMs, only close to 6 once. I guess I drive fairly relaxed and try to be easy on the fuel costs. My parents have a 05 camry with the 2.4 and have never wished for more power. I've driven it and i like it lots.
I've still got lots to learn about torque/hp, powerbands, etc. I appreciate all the info on these boards!
