Check Engine Light On and Off....help

Hi i have a automatic 2006 matrix xr with about 60,000km on it. never had any problems until the check engine light came on. it comes on and once in a while it will come off. when it does come one, the car shudders or shakes when it shifts up a gear most noticeably from 1st to 2nd. so i was going to take it to the dealership to get it checked out and soon as i got there the engine light came off so i decided to just go back home didnt want look dumb. then when i got home, guess what, engine light on again. PLEASE HELP

Regardless of wether the light is on or not the code will be stored in the computer system, so even if it turns off they will still be able to see what code it was setting when it was acting up.

i know that they can still see the code while the light is off, i just thought that i didnt need to go to the dealership when the light was off. my friend is telling me that this is happening because of the way i drive. i usually put the car in neutral when i am going down a steep hill for a long time and then back into drive. he says that this may be a reason why....can anybody confirm??

Putting it in neutral while driving is definatly not a good idea but I doubt its the cause of your check engine light. The best thing to do is get the code scanned to at least get an idea of where the problem lies.

get in there with a screwdriver and crank it back a couple thousand km...then crank it forward again after you leave.

Apparently PartSource will read the code for you for free. Get the code and post here and then I can tell you what the code means.
