DRL: To disable, or not?

I'm thinking of trying the disable mod. Anyone input from those who have on ease of doing so? Why to do it, or why not to? Any problems come inspection? Will the disable affect the auto-on feature (not a problem if it does)?

I think the only reason you'd want to disable the DLR is if you install hids. They will flicker without full voltage to them

That's the reason why I disabled mine.

when i get more time, and money, i am going to put in 2 switches in one of the spare slots to the left of my steering wheel. the switches will be to disable the drl, and to disable the reverse beep. that way if i want to have the drls working as that, then i just flip the switch, and if i want to sell the car later, i dont have to rework it to re-enable the reverse beep or drls.

I did it -- very easy. I didn't even hook up a switch just cut the #12 wire (see the link in the Matrix resource thread). Yes, it does disable the auto on feature. The lights are only controlled by the switch on the left stalk.

I did it just because I found them annoying -- particularly the hyper sensitive auto on.

That's a pet peeve for me also. I drive on some 'back country' roads, some of which have sections of trees, the lights will go on and off frequently which is a pain since the cluster also dims. Very annoying while wearing sunglasses. Another reason I want to is to save the life of the bulbs, and I'm tired of cars thinking for me. Every other vehicle I've ever driven I had to manually flip em on, so why are DRLs becoming standard? Pure laziness or what?

It's for "safety" reasons, but there have been no proven increased safety levels after they became standard. If anything, they add to the distractions on the road, especially those high beam DRLs. What a nice way to stay safe by blinding oncoming traffic. It's really stupid. Some military facilities don't allow vehicles with DRL equipped for a similar reason as well.

So if its a safety standard, (which i agree is not that safe at all and equally stupid), then why dont they make all lights on; tails, license plate, sidemarkers etc? They could just eliminate the need for the stalk, making vehicles even safer!

There are kits to change DRLs from the headlights to the indicator/parking lights. Those I think are less distracting and still noticeable.

DRL are supposed to be noticeable and are supposed to catch your attention. What is it distracting you from?
How does this keep you from driving safely?
Should people not wear reflective clothing when walking at night because it's too distracting?
I don't understand your comments

Apparently, you haven't witnessed high beam DRLs from the car behind you. It's very annoying. Sure, it should catch your attention, but are they really necessary? Are there any proven results that can confirm that cars with DRLs are safer than those without?

I have never seen a car with high beam DRL. Are you sure they didn't have thier high beams on? I agree with you that High Beam DRL would be stupid and an actual hazard .
I live in BC and on every new car sold since.......at least early 90's it is mandatory to have DRLs on the vehicle. I know of no manufacturers up here that use high beam DRL.

Watch out for the new Hondas. Most of them have high beam DRLs. Most meaning the always popular Civic and Accord. http://www.lightsout.org/index.html
