the xrs is a better buy. you still get ample performance from it, though not as much as the turbo 3. either one is designed to run on high octane fuel (92 or higher). the xrs will get better gas mileage on a regular basis, and the car will cost less (unless the mazda was beat to hell and is being sold to you like that). under the same driving conditions, the xrs will last longer. a turbo will eventually burn out, and when it does, the car runs like shit until it is replaced, and replacing a turbo can be very costly ($1000+ is the low end of turbo replacement).
a turboed car will also run insurance higher in most cases than a naturally aspirated car. my insurance company, when i first put my xrs on, saw it as a carolla, a small car with low maintenance requirements.
i have a 2003 xrs myself, and i rather enjoy it. there is something to be said about revving up to 8200 rpm, and it has a nice kick at 6200 rpm. i love lift. also, the 2zz motor can be turboed and put out quite nicely, or so i have heard.
