check engine light 05 matrix

I got gas last night at midnight from a Lukoil station I never went to. Today my check engine light was on. I checked the gas cap over and over, clicking it sometimes 5 or 6 times to make sure it was on. I did notice something I wasn't sure of though.

When I took off the gas cap, I could see straight into my gas tank. I could probably just drop something in there if I wanted. Isn't there supposed to be a valve that is over the hole in the tank? The same valve that gets pushed forward when you put the gas pump in the hole to fill the tank? Could maybe that valve be stuck open and be causing the problem?

Also can bad gas or maybe water in the gas cause a check engine light to come on? the car has about 41,000 miles on it and i haven't noticed anything wrong w/ the car. It's been great.

If the gas cap needs to be replaced, is this something that I can get at an auto shop or do i have to order it special from toyota?

Before you do too much running around and hypothesizing about what the problem could be, take the thing to autozone and get the code retrieved from the computer to see what your car is trying to tell you. It may be totally unrelated to fuel, there's no way to know.

You can also reset the CEL by disconnecting the battery for about 15 minutes. If it was the gas cap, it would stay on for a few days after it was fixed. If you reset it and it comes back on, then you've still got the problem. Get the code to be sure. It's a free service at Autozone, from what I'm told.

there is a currently a TSB concerning a new updated fuel filler neck. just depends on what codes you are getting.
