Hello again.Sorry about the post message. New here.
I have a '06 Matrix with an error code of P2716. Thought it was the gas cap but car is starting to shift rough in low gears but runs great when not accelerating. Shift solenoid valve, ECM reprogramming required? Common problem? What to expect from dealer when I take it in? Love my car. Just want her to feel better. Thank you all. Will visit here often.
Apparently, there was a TSB issued over a year ago. Take it back to the dealer and they should handle it no questions asked. Click and print off the PDF below.
Thanks for the info and link. Wish I knew about that TSB before it happened. Hopefully I didn't damage anything by driving it home when it happened. Just one more little trip. I like this place so at least I don't go to the dealer feeling uneducated. Hope its running good soon.
Just in case anyone gets this problem in the future just hope the warranty is still good. Glad mine is.I found out that the PCM does have to be replaced and will be ordered and installed sometime by the end of the week. They told me there was a more current TSB for my '06 Matrix on the same problem. Glad it happened now. Don't know if it could happen again or not. Thanks
Just an update. Found out that I will be without my car for some weeks since there are thousands of PCM's on backorder. So my car has to wait in line with the rest of them. Am picking up a loaner from dealer tomorrow until my car is fixed. I just wonder where I am in the snowball effect concerning the PCM problems with the 2006 vehicles. I read that you could schedule this TSB to be done before anything goes wrong with your car but I had no clue there was a TSB on it until it was to late. Seems the problem is so bad its all hush-hush and then its like wow I guess we need to do the TSB after it goes haywire. I also think that before the check engine light came on and stayed on the car started burning way to much gas. Gas miles were way off so that may be a clue on something happening soon. Keep an eye on that. I am not angry or mad at the dealer and they are treating me fair and cordially. I still love my car.
I am having the exact same problem. When I called the Dealer, O'Reagan's in Halifax NS, they said its your gas cap. I had it in for servicing and they reset the ecu so the light went off for a day. As the shifting grew harder, I continued to call and each time I was assured that it was OK to drive and that they would call when the part came in.
It continued to worsen and feeling that I may be doing harm to my vehicle I called again and explained yet again what was going on and asked when my car would be fixed? The lady on this day asked why I was still driving the vehicle and said that in some cases this problem has created a danger to the driver. She would not elaborate. She said to take the car right in and get a rental.
Thankfully I am still under warranty, but I just don't feel that the dealership or Toyota Canada have been dealing fairly with me. Is this a big problem? Is the comapny informing owners that a problem exists? No. They are waiting for owners to notice the problem.
I have always driven a Toyota, a new one every 5-6 years for the past 20 years. They have always been great, but with this issue I am having second thoughts.

its the dealership not toyota whos not being fair with you.. but honestly the matrix has the worst quality in the toyota lineup....
My car is fixed now that I can tell. Not to trusting of it yet and have not left town to check out a long ride but have been through a full tank of gas. The dealer gave me a loaner after a week without a car when I had to leave town. Told me I could keep the loaner until my car was fixed. Said car part was on the way from Puerto Rico and it will be 2 or 3 weeks. They called me on a monday after that weekend and said it was fixed. Don't know if part got here but car has been running like it should. I would like to give the dealer benefit of the doubt but we'll just see if it lasts. Sorry about others finding out like I did. I would not drive it though.
hey, I just join this website and I am glad I did. I'm learning so much from all of you guys; just to go along with this trend here today in the morning I was experiencing the same problem with my 06 matrix, I thought it was the gas cap cuz the previous nite I had gone to the gas station to fill up. I drove the car for about 40km and it was making this very hard knocking went changing gears, but it was also slipping at the same time, so I decided to skip work and drove straight to the dealer instead. They checked it out and said it was the ECU or ECM they said it was being order and were going to get it in a couple of days. They got rid of the code and my baby is driving fine for now.

mine started shifting harshly and the check engine light came on.Im taking it to the dealer and they WILL honor it even though I have 90k miles on it.Ill get a lawyer if they dont. They shouldve notified me about this potential problem before it happened.

Here it is 2 years after this post thread started , and its helping people out today in 2009.
This morning my 2005 Toyota Corolla started shifting roughly at acceleration. Minutes later the engine check light came on. First time the light has ever come on. I went into one auto repair chain store and they were thnking out loud of taking the transmission apart, and/or thinking it might be a solenoid inside the transmission(about $700 estimate)......I slowly walked out backwards out of the place.
I did find out it was a code P2716 and a quick internet search bought me this Toyota website, and the likely issue and i have 78000 miles.
Do i understand this right? Because its a TSB issue, the dealer will not charge me a nickel to repair it?
