I'm thinking about getting an '05 or '06 Matrix XRS. I currently have an '05 Tacoma PreRunner, and the truck has been great! However, I'll be doing a longer commute, so I need a more economic car. I'd prefer to get the years mentioned since they came out with a 6 speed manual. Any suggestions, tips, comments would be greatly appreciated.
Hmm..well, why the Matrix XRS and not the Corolla XRS? I suggest you keep your eyes pealed for both. You might have a hard time locating either one..although you do live in South Florida, so you might have a better chance.
I take it you want to have some aspect of performance yet have an economical car? It's been mentioned before, but you'll need to keep in mind that you'll have to fill up with premium, no exceptions with the 2zzge. I've logged my own Corolla XRS as high as 31 mpg at certain fill ups, and as low as ~21 mpg in some winter city driving (although I live up north)...
My suggestion is go with it, you won't be disappointed. I just hope you can find a decent Corolla or Matrix XRS in your area that hasn't been abused or similar.
There's a yellow 2004 XRS right down the street from me for sale. It's at a Mazda dealer and has been sitting on that lot for almost a year. I think it had around 40,000 miles and they are asking $13,500
the parking brake is weak
the rear hatch does not hold up when cold
revs at 3000 rpms a 100kph which uses a lot more fuel (high octane fuel)
interior fit and finish is poor.
slight belt noise when cold
and a weak clutch! (wears out fast)
the parking brake is weak (yes)
the rear hatch does not hold up when cold (yes)
revs at 3000 rpms a 100kph which uses a lot more fuel (high octane fuel)
interior fit and finish is poor. (rattles,, yes)
slight belt noise when cold (yes, like any other toyota)
and a weak clutch! (wears out fast) (n/a)
i got a 03' XRS i believe in my gen the XRS' have a bit more power than a 05' and 06'...maybe you should look into it
slight belt noise when cold
and a weak clutch!
91 premium gas
this is the only probs i encountered so far in reagrds to the rear hatch really no point of opening if it is -30 freezing rain/snow....therefore it won't hold
regardless i know for a fact the its a great car....

the engines in the xrs are the same!
but they change the way they tested the engines for pwr
03 they rated them 180 hp then retested them and rated them164 hp
same engin though
The lift points were changed. In 03 lift engaged at 6200 RPM's, then in 04 6500 RPM and 05/06 at 6800 RPM. As the lift point was raised low end torque increased.
you mean the 03 xrs has a different engine than the 05 and 06?
No they did not have more power. They all dyno exactly the same to the wheels in terms of peak power (154 - 158 HP to the wheels stock and around 167 - 170 WHP with intake/exhaust SAE corrected), yet they are rated at 170 HP instead of 180 HP. When you look at the power and torque curves, you begin to understand the differences.
The only difference is between the tuning of the engine. The 2003 2ZZ-GE has a lower lift engagement point at 6250 rpm while the 2005 - 2006 lift engagement is at 6650 rpm, but has a more flatter and usable torque curve between 3000 - 4500 rpm as compared to the 2003. However, the lower lift engagement in 2003 makes it easier to keep the 2003 in the powerband through shifts since it makes better torque in the 6000 - 6700 rpm range.
