Vehicle Data Recorder

I was looking at a 2009 Corolla owners manual and read something about a vehicle data recorder which record vehicle speed, if brakes are applied, position of steering wheel, etc. My question is does the 2007 Matrix XR that I'm in the process of buying have one of these recorders? If so, can I have a dealer plug into it and see if the speedometer was disconnected? The reason I ask is because the mileage on the car seems rediculously low for a 2007. Any input would be appreciated.

Nowadays im assuming that mostly from 2000 vehicles and up should have it !!!! in case of an accident the dealer takes that so called "recorder" and shows how the cause of an accident happened..such as failed brakes, over excessive speed, not wearing seatbelt...you got the point...

So, does this recorder have a odometer reading in it to help keep down odometer fraud. I've heard of people that lease cars having a switch installed inline on the vehicle speed sensor wire to shut off the speedometer, keeping there mileage within the lease agreement. Could a dealer go into the blackbox and retreive vehicle mileage or not? Like I said in the previous post, the Matrix I am purchasing only has 3,000 miles on it and it would be nice to find out before hand if this is the actual mileage.

never heard that this was done before unless you may have to dig a lil deeper if this was actually done.....maybe you can check www.carfax.com i heard this is free of charge..it shows where the car is registered etc...

i would ask the dealer for a carfax report on the car if your concerned about it. it may just be a late model 07 from end of last year that was traded in on a new 09. some ppl just dont drive that much or live close to work and dont have to drive very far at all.

I am not 100% positive, but I don't think those recorders would have an odometer on them. They only record the events that occurred in a relatively short window of time (don't know how big it is -- if it is the last 5 min, 20min, 60min that the engine was running). Based on that, I doubt it would do what you are asking. I do think that all cars built over the last several years have these recorders.
