Real Cargo volume in Matrix with seats up?

Hi everybody, I'm looking for a car with decent cargo space with the seats up (we're getting a dog), and I came across the Matrix. I'm confused though, because I've seen 2 numbers referred to. The mfr specs say 21.8 cu. feet, but many places say it's about 15 feet, big difference. Yahoo Autos says it's the difference between EPA (what's that?) and mfr specs.

Thanks for any clarification.

The Protege5 has about 20, if I'm correct, and the Golf hatchback about 18, so they're a bit on the small side I think.

The '04 brochure says it has 21.8 cu ft w/ seats up and 53.2 w/ seats down.

I know that... but it seems that there must be two ways of measuring. That's what Yahoo Autos indicates. All their cars have two measurements, EPA and MFR. So I was wondering if the EPA number is some sort of real-life usable number or what?

From Yahoo Autos, 2004 Matrix:

Cargo Volume (EPA) 15
Cargo Volume (MFR) 21.8

To add to the confusion, the Canadian Matrix brochure actually lists 15 cu. feet. The car is made in Canada, even for the American market, AFAIK.

So which is right? And why the diffs?

In your situation, I say screw the stats. If you're looking for a car based on cargo space alone, just go out and physically look at the trunk of all the cars you're interested in. Won't do any good looking at numbers.

To sway you toward a Matrix , I'm gonna say that there's a bit more head clearance and opening in the Matrix vs. the MP5 and the Golf. There's also an available pet barrier.

Thank you for the help! And from a fellow Canuck too! I think I'll head out and look at it. The Matrix does look pretty cool, I'm leaning towards it actually.

Toyota Nation is actually based here in Toronto. That's why, if you take the time to look around, you'll find the majority of people here are from Toronto.
