2003 Matrix - all power locks are failing!!!

The power door locks on my 2003 Matrix are all broken or failing. Is this a common problem?

The driver's door was the first to go. The lock just stopped responding to both remote keyless entry AND the electronic lock button on the door arm rest. The only way to lock/unlock the door is to manually toggle the lock button (just above the door handle) or with a key. It wasn't a huge deal, since that door is always used.

After paying $60, Toyota told us the door lock mechanism had failed and it would cost about $600 to replace. I believe the part itself costs over $500, so we can't just take it elsewhere or attempt to fix it ourselves for less money.

Then one of the rear passenger door locks periodically failed. After a few days, it too stopped responding to both the driver's arm rest electronic button and remote keyless entry. This makes it very difficult for my wife to get our baby in and out of the car.

Now, the other rear passenger door lock has just failed. Within 1 year, 3 door locking mechanisms have failed.

I originally paid about $1800 for the power lock option, if memory serves. Now I am looking at spending the same amount to have 3 (of 5) locks fixed. This just reeks of inferior parts. Is anybody else experiencing these problems?

Does anyone know the best way to file a complaint with Toyota? Even though we have kept up on all maintenance issues and treat the car well, and I don't think I should have to shell out a dime to fix these locks, I'd be willing to spend a reasonable amount if they replace ALL 5 door locks and give me a decent warranty on them. As it is, I can't afford to replace them all for $600 each...

You can talk to a dealer but doubt if you will receive any compensation or help.

Can suggest trying an auto salvage yard for replacement locks or buying a Toyota OEM part at a discount dealer from a site such as below. Then doing the job yourself.
