The 2nd one you speak of is sort of like a plastic diffuser meant to smooth out the incoming air right before the intake air hits the MAF & IAT sensors.
When you install a SRI or CAI this diffuser is removed along with the entire OEM airbox.
It is not needed on aftermarket intakes but it is necessary with the OEM air box.
If you remove the diffuser - it may (some have already had tried this) throw a CEL.

The one im talking about doesnt look plastic, it sits right above the stock filter, and its has some sore of white crap in it to. I think the one your refering to is the plastic honeycomb in the very top of the filter box i know thats for straighting the airflow. The white one looks like its set in place with plastic rivets. I'm just curious, i already removed the long intake tubing after the airbox. I just wondered if this restriction can be removed safely to.
can you get pics of what you are talking about and post them up here? people can probably help more with pictures.

Yeah its like a second filter and yes its an 05 ... Im seriously thinking about getting it outta there. Maybe thats part of why my mpg isnt at the sticker. I baby this thing and get 25 city when the sticker claims 28. Anyone else care to chime in?
i removed mine yesterday....when i installed my k&n filter....i reset my computer and took it for a drive and the throttle response was a lot better ..no cel for me...

Did you have that second white screen in the upper lid??
Does anyone else have this second filter.....? I removed mine the other day and wow i cant believe how restrictive that little thing is. Hope i see a difference in mileage..

I have it on my 05 XR. After reading this thread, I looked at mine, and yes it is there. Mine is clean and i did not notice it when I replaced my stock filter with k&N. It looks like it is held by 6 screws, but it seems kind hard to take out without being able to turn it upside down. How did you take yours out?

If you disconnect it from the intake tubing you can turn it over. Its held in with plactic rivets so the only way to get it out is to break the rivets. I took a flathead screwdriver and popped the rivets. If you do take it out try blowing air through it, not much goes through...

Any body knows why this thing is there, and what is its purpose. Moreover, why it does not exist on 03-04 models?
