Code P0440 or P0442?

This is an emissions issues, the car will still run OK. If your car requires smog inspection it may or may pass the test. Basically the fuel system is leaking gas fumes into the air instead of storing them in the canister and having the engine burn them. As such the car is no longer meeting environmental standards.

i think that is the code i got when my catalytic converter went out. for me, the cat was covered under warranty, so i had it replaced free. i didnt notice anything that seemed wrong with the car. it still drove just fine, no weird noises or anything. if you still have any warranty on it, i suggest you take it to the dealer to look at. it is my understanding that the catalytic converters have gone out for several people in the matrix.

since a pontiac vibe is a matrix. if its out of warranty this is what you should do. Is the gas cap an original toyota part? if so. you will have to replace the fuel filler neck. there is a new updated one and there is a TSB on this particular problem

yes, i did replaace the gas cap and reset the computer and the light came back on after a day or to. So u say there is a new filler neck? My filler neck wobbles a bit, maybe thats the problem. I also heard that there is a federal waranty for emmisions systems for 80,000 miles. Is that true? thanks for the replies all.
