strange noise from engine compartment

I have a 2007 Matrix (45k highway miles) and recently I started the car up (cold) and heard a 'squeeking' sound that I thought might be a worn bearing sound. It's not really rattling, just making a regular 'squeek'. After about 10-15 minutes I could barely hear it. I have tried to identify where it's coming from and it seems like it's coming from the alternator (top) rather than the lower motor.

Is this a sign of a failure that could happen in the near future? Should I take it to my mechanic to replace the culprit?

bearings don't squeak. Its probable the belt and replacing it is a snap if you have the tools.

It's the belt for sure. Get a Goodyear Gatorback belt and you won't have the rattle coming back year after year.
