2008 Matrix - Brakes Failed

I have a standard 2008 Matrix. Yesterday, During rush hour traffic, I was cut off and of course, stepped hard on the brake peddle which did not descend at all. It was like stepping on a brick. Luckily, I was able to down shift and kept my car from hitting the car in front of me. This happened again not 15 minutes later. Same scenario. Another driver cut in front of me and slammed on their brakes causing me to do the same but... no brakes. Just a peddle that wouldn't descend. Both times when I stepped on the brake the second time they engaged. I have the car in for service right now and Toyota has told me that the car checks out fine and that there is nothing wrong with it. I asked them to check again. I wanted to know if anyone else had a similar issue with the braking system.

Brake booster issue? Try to do the same thing in an empty parking lot and see if it does the same thing. And check the brake system (pads, rotors, calipers, fluids) to see that it is as it should be.
