Canada Intake (engine) Air Filter longevity

How long in years and and kilometers/mileage can a Toyota Matrix engine air filter be expected to last ? My Toyota dealer today inspected it and said it was still good. It's never been changed, 3 years old and (06 Matrix) and close to 50,000 kilometers on it.

It depend how dirty it is. If you take it out on a sunny day of just put it high under your ceiling light and you can see light thru it then it's still good. But again physical look is important...if it turn grey on one side then it very dirty...time to change.

I've always based it on how dirty it is. Although, like oil changes, people have peace of mind by setting themselves intervals i.e. annually, every 24,000km, etc.

Your environment doesn't seem to be doing much harm after 3yrs/50000km. I'd say change it when you do get to 50K and perhaps make your next change at 100K.
