Owner of a "new" 2003 Toyota Matrix!

Hi, I just got back home from the dealership. I just bought my first car, a 2003 2WD Toyota Matrix. I'm so pleased with it.

Any tips on what to look out for? I live in Michigan, so snow, ice, and sleet are my way these days.

Also, the CHECK ENGINE light came on. It came on during the test drive, so we took it back and they said it was due to a loose gas cap. (We asked if we could take it to our mechanic, and during the drive over to Midas, I pulled over and put a couple of gallons of gas since it was running low.) They reset it I guess and we test drove it again before we bought it. I took the cap off, put it back on and drove around a bit to see if the CEL would come back on.

Congrats! I just bought my 2003 Matrix XRS automatic a few months ago and have found this forum to be very helpful.

Only issue I have had so far is that the road noise is higher than I would like. In the summer, I am planning to apply some sound-deadening material in the doors and on the floor.

Pics coming soon.

It's beautiful though. And enough room to fit all my hockey gear. I'm a goalie, so room for gear is a must.

Take it into an Autozone or Pepboys and get the code read. Then come back and tell us what it is and you'll get your answer.

Like I said, I took it to Midas during the test drive. They said the tires will probably be needing replacing in the nearish future, but other than that, nothing looked wrong.

The dealership guy said the loose gas cap caused the CEL, but you know how those guys are. They reset it and said it shouldn't be a problem.

Hopefully nothing is breaking down already.

If the CEL comes on again, make sure you get the code.

Same here. Bought 03 matix xr and the check engine light is on as well. Gonna take it to advance to check it out. Also would really like to tune it up a bit with engine mods and body kits. Im familiar with hondas and bought the matrix to try something new. Couldnt really find and engine swap and was wondering if there was one.
