HID : Functionability vs Style

I've been really hesitant about getting and installing the 6000K HIDs for the '03 trixter. My concern is the actual usability of HIDs with the stock headlight configuration vs the style that they only seem to give. I've seen some cars with HIDs with and without projector setups and they look like shit. I am next to them at a light; my stock bulbs are brighter, give a wider beam, and the light cuts into thier lane. The only ones I've seen that look good and actually work are on high end makes/models. Unless of course that's just the DIYers around here that don't know what they are doing. I don't want to spend the $$$ and be worse off at night then I am now. I was informed by my cousin, (who is a mechanic for Mercedes-Benz), that I would be better off buying some really good bulbs from a local auto shop, saving the money and will get close to the same light output because of the diamond cut design of the headlight. Any thoughts or opinions here would be appreciated.

You can always get a projector kit and retrofit like me and other guys from Matrixowners.com do Although I did have regular Hid Kit on before. You are right about the light HID into our normal headlight reflector but it is brighter than stock for sure.

A simple HID replacement does more to style than function because all you're simply doing is changing the colour temperature and doubtful increasing light output at all. It may just appear so.

HID coupled with projectors would definitely increase the function factor.

We're discussing if the addition of HID's increases function vs style not just function vs style in general.

Im not even gonna lie, I am not as handy as I would like to be. I'm not one of the people who likes to just take stuff apart to see how it works, so therefore I am not really the best person to try a projector overhaul. I'd rather just pay someone to do it. Not that I'm lazy, I just dont have the patience.

That answered my question for the most part. I guess I'm looking at getting some expensive bulbs then.

HID is not expensive like it used to be. I can get a kit for $80 shipped and the last for couple years

i have the same concern. i want to make the most use out of my HIDs and not have half the light shooting everywhere else other than the ground. the best thing to do is to retrofit real projectors and you'll get great results. if you aren't good at building them or have the patience like me, there are companies out there that does custom headlights but at a cost of course. well worth it in my opinion. when i bought my new car i've really wanted to get HIDs again but did not want to slap on a plug and play kit as i know it'll have a lot of glare. i ended up getting a projector retrofit using tsx projectors and i've never been happier. it's good to be unique too.

i remember when i bought my first HID kit back in 2002 it was close to $600. now a day kits are so cheap that everyone has them on their car and now you'll have a ton of blinding lights coming at you at night lol use to be cool before but now plug and play kits are just not as cool. retrofit is the way to go now =)
