Heavy soot on the plug might indicate that cylinder is burning oil - assuming that the coil pack is fine. Try switching it with another plug and see if the misfire follows the coil or stays with the cylinder. Since new plugs "seemed" to fix it - I would suspect something with the cylinder.
Could also be a damaged signal wire in the ignition harness / connector feeding the #2 cylinder. Little harder to check that electrically (need a multimeter, maybe a signal injector - probe) - but a good visual inspection can catch any obvious signs of damage, burnt, discolored, worn insulation on wires, etc.
Try a compression test - compession on the cylinder should around 200's PSI, minimum is 145 PSI. Should be no more than 16 PSI difference between cylinders. If this is not the case - you have to do some more diagnostic work to find out what is causing the problem. Could be anything from a bent valve, damaged valve seat, to stuck piston rings, to leaky valve seals.
