I am a jeep guy, that is all I have ever owned, but now gas mileage is an issue. I am trading my jeep for a 2003 Matrix XRS with 118k miles on it. Is there anything I should look out for/ask the owner before I trade? Anything I should know?
make sure the clutch is in EXCELLENT condition... because it's a HUGE project to replace it... I'd advise against getting the Xrs personally if you only care about Mpg... go for the base model automatic, a lot less to deal with when it comes to maintenance, and you don't have to use premium...
The XRS is a great choice, both gas mileage wise if you just drive conservatively yet great fun and power for those times you want to push it. \the only weak link in the XRS is the clutch, but at 118K it may haver been recently done.
watch out for the motor. i have had my motor rebuilt under warranty on my 03 XRS. it does wind up high (8200 RPM), but that is harder on the motor and if it was abused, like mine was before i got it, then the motor is liable to go for a spun rod bearing.
i personally love the manual transmission on my XRS, and i despise an automatic on it.

Hmmm 118K is too much for a high revving motor! Expect some clutch problems, check compression before buying it! Take it to a trusted mechanic and have him/her inspect it

i am having to drive a couple hours and I am trading my jeep for this car. the guy is legit and has offered anything i request, such as VIN for carfax. i will not be able to get a mechanic to look at it, is that okay do you think?
this really seems like a good deal for me:
- my jeep has 146k miles - the xrs has 118k
- my jeep gets like 13 mpg (lift/big tires) - xrs gets close to 30 mpg
- my jeep is a 98' - xrs is a 2003
it just seems like a great deal for me and the guy wants to get back into jeeps..also he says the clutch was replaced by toyota dealer in May of 07' and most of miles were on highway to/from work.
overall it seems like a great deal for me, other than assuming the guy is trying to mess me around, which i know he is not, seems like a good deal right?

like i said, the clutch is really the only problem... the Xrs is a great little car, and you'll get a lot more like out of that engine if you take care of it. (some of the people post about how theirs are past 300,000, and still running) its great that the clutch was replaced recently, mine went out at about 85,000. i'd say go for it...
congrats if you get it and especially if the clutch has been replaced. If the people who owned it before didn't know anything about "Lift" then the engine should be in good shape. Granted they took good care of the maintanance, then all should be good. Plus there's some free mods that you can do on the car that may help it out a little on the hp side.

what are these free mods? O.o and i heard that replacing the clutch when it goes out with an aftermarket one fixes the problem. i forgot to mention that in my previous posts =P
yes, what are these free mods you speak of...i know in the jeep i could remove a restrictor-type piece out of the air box for more efficient air-flow...tell me tell me!
yes, my cherokee was lifted 5.5" with 33's, but the mpg was killing me!
