Need help. Posted video. Carrier bearing problem?

Hi,

Note: 2005 XR front wheel drive.

I wanted to see how this looks like on their matrix.
I was investigating a weird vibration from my car for the past 10km it comes and goes. Yesterday i noticed some play where the passenger's side drive shaft enters the transmission. I believe this is were the carrier bearing lies. Does everyone's shaft have that much play or does it appear that my bearing is worn out. The driver's side does not have this much play. Thanks for checking this out.

Tom,
From what I see theres no oil leaking which is good. Not sure if there should be that much play in the axle. And I'm not sure if that one is splined where the axle goes into the tranny, I know that there should be a little play but not that much. It's not just the cover for the CV joint thats moving is it? Good luck

Mine - it moves a little bit, but yours does seem a bit excessive. On the Corolla, it hardly moves, but it does move. I believe that the specs say that 2-3mm movement is typical in the axial (parallel to the axle) direction.

If the bearing is that worn out - you might feel a thumping noise rather than a vibration. I would check out the tire balance (note how much weight is on there now, rule of thumb, anything more than 2oz means either it wasn't balance right or the wheel/tire is seriously messed up.) Or a bad wheel hub (not running true, have them do a runout test on the hub).

There are a few 9th gen Corolla (mechanically similar to the Matrix) that had a nasty, intermittent vibration. Many had their wheels balanced and rebalanced, rotated them all which ways, replaced wheels and tires - turned out it was a hub that was warped.
