oil pan nuts- torque value

It looks like my 2003 ZZFE oil pan seal is leaking oil. The dealer wants $18 for a tube of silicone. Have you guys used a brand other than the factory silicone for this project? Do you just put a bead on one surface and put it on right away or let it dry a little? Did you use a thin or thick coat? What torque value do you use on the little nuts? Thanks

the toyota silicone is the best and the torque settings are very low like 17lbs or something. you really do not want to over tight because the silicone could be damaged again. Try to find toyota silicone online for a little cheaper but the others aren't as good

Thanks Yotatrix, I kept digging and it looks like the torque is 90 in lbf. You got me thinking maybe I should get to Toyota brand of silicone so I don't have to do the job more than once.

there's aftermarket gasket for the oil pan, is this recommended to use?
Does toyota use a gasket, I don't see one called out.
What's the toyota silicone stuff called or part#.
Anyone try the permatex great stuff gasket maker.
There's a variety of gasket sealant avail, black, red, cooper, hi-temp, etc.
What's recommended, anyone had bad experience with any of the silicone sealants.
I may have a similar very intermittent oil leak on at the oil pan, seem last owner may of bumped something with oil pan, there's a gouge on the bottom, maybe the sealant got a hairline crack. ?
thanks for your reply.

Toyota stuff is a silicone FIPG (Form In Place Gasket) type, you don't use a premade gasket, just run a bead of the silicone (4-5mm), and assemble before it starts to partially cure - otherwise, you'd have to start-over / scrap everything back off.

Part# 08826-00080 - Toyota Black Silicone FIPG

I think I paid $10-$12 for a tube of the stuff a couple of years ago. Other have used Permatex Ultra Black stuff and had good results with that as well. Copper or other Hi-Temp stuff is overkill - if the motor oil got that hot, you'd have other problems on your hands.

The torque rating I found was 80 in.lbs (Toyota FSM) unless there was a change to it. yotatrix is absolutely right, have to watch how much you tighten the pan. You don't want to be squeezing all the goo out between the two surfaces. Silicone sealant is used over gaskets, because you can get a better seal between two potentially uneven surfaces. This of course, assumes that the mating surfaces are clean and there is no dirt to mess with the adhesion process.

As for damage to the oil pan - I'd check that out sooner than later. Depending on where the pan got hit (generally the lowest part - which happens to be the worst spot) - could have damaged / loosened the oil pickup. May not be a problem now, but could be one down the road if you let it go too far.
